Shimano components interchangable

I've just bought new wheels for the summer and speaking to a friend he told me of his difficulties in changing the cassette over. So I thought it might be easier buying a new cassette for the spare wheels. If I buy a new casssette I would like to start the upgrade of components.

Would an Ultegra 10 spd cassette work with the remaining Tiagra components? I take it I would also need a 10 spd chain to make this work?

Yes Tiagra's 9 spd.

10 speed cassette won't work with 9 speed shifters. Also I wouldn't use a part worn chain with brand new components as you will get accelerated wear on the new parts.
