Can I rebuild my egg beaters?

My trusty old egg beaters finally gave in this morning, riding along and something did not feel right, went to unclip and the pedal stayed on my shoe and the spindle stayed on the bike :( . I know that egg beaters are ment to be easily fixable but mine are the cheap ones with loose bearings and all the rebuild kits I can find appear to have sealed bearings. I don't really want to buy another set.

Thanks

  • If they are really that knackered, then stump for a new set theyre kicking around for about £38 for the 2010 eggbeater c's rrp was £50 ish. Rebuild kits are around the £20 mark. If you have used and abused them the springs will probabally need changing too!!! So IMO go for a new pair with spanking new cleats included!!

CRC are selling rebuild kits for £13, if my springs are ok is it worth taking a punt with one, can't really afford a new pair. Will the sealed bearing fit my pedals which have/had loose ones? There appears to be a different kit for 2003 models, can I tell if mine are post 03 (they do not have a screw in cap).

  • No the sealed bearing units will not fit your pedals, there are some bonded bearing races instead!!

Pop a bearing out take it down to an LBS and buy some new bearings, a good ceramic based grease like finish line. Strip them down and clean everything up with a good degreaser, inspect any rubber seals if theyre not craked or spit theyre still ok. Take off any corrosion on axles and races carefully with some 3000 grit wet and dry (just remove the corrosion if there is any not any anodising or oil blacking) grease everything back up, pack the races with the grease pop in the right number of new ball bearings add a squirt of grease, pop the axles and seals back in, torque the retaining nuts back up, pop on end caps and give them a whirl!!!

    Max cost £10
  • Oh yeah take photos of every stage of dismantling it will help the rebild if you get stuck!!

i.e remove nut photo, pop out seal photo, photo of bearings etc etc etc!!!!!

Have taken them apart and the end of the shaft is still in the nut oops, have never heard of a pedal shaft snapping, I don't think they are worth fixing.

Thanks for all the advice guys, back to ebay.
