Dust off the memory - late 70s & early 80s tunes please!

Right. Having recently been introduced to the delights of Spotify, I have started to put together a list of tunes from my yoof. No, not Arthur Askey, Vera Lynn,et al. Yoof, not childhood.

So I'm looking for stuff that was getting radio airplay from the late 70s to the early 80s. Glam rock lovers need not apply (cos it's the wrong period, and utter shite). At the mo, I'm going back to circa Cruel to be Kind as far as stuff that was contemporary when played, and things like Hotel California/the Beach Boys for old stuff that was getting airplay then.

Mid 80s is the cut off - Into The Groove is well into the twilight of this window.

So, let's have some suggestions please. I've googled a few 80s playlists, but they are too US-centric. There's a limit to how much REO Speedwagon a man can take.

Winning entries will receive the satisfaction of a job well done.

[cue "jokes" about 78s, and playlists that would make Charlotte Green pee herself with the giggles]
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

One of the first albums i owned was Now 1. It's the tail end of the period you mention, but might bring back some good memories.

Did the Beach Boys keep their success into the 70's?

Seriously though for the 70's early 80's nowt better than Bowie, any L.P. of that era, or is he classed as Glam Rock.

First album I ever bought :)
  • How about "Kitchen at Parties" by Jona Lewie, currently playing on an Ikea ad. Sorry if this is way off, I'm a tad too young, you know. :D

You could try wikipedia listings for number one singles by year

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nu ... f_1974_(UK)#1974

    and so on.

I'm only 8 years younger than the OP - funny how such a small time gap can lead to a completely different cultural experience

Off the top of my head...

    The Police.
Big Audio Dynamite (might be a shade too late)
    Elton John - Rocket Man
    Dire Straits
    The Buggles
    Joy Division

Then I Googled and found this:

    FCN 2-4.

  • Oooh, would Ian Dury make the list?

If the number in your username is a clue to your age then you're pretty much the same age as me. This is something I've been meaning to do for years, so will have to put the zimmer away and dig up the memory banks

    Here's a few random starters for 10:

    Siouxsie & the Banshees.
Early Simple Minds - New Gold Dream is the cut off.
    Echo & the Bunnymen
    Cure
    Blondie
Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous
    Clash
Micheal Jackson - Off the Wall
    The Police
    Specials
    Selector
    Madness
    The Beat
    Peter Gabriel
    Kate Bush
U2 - War is the cut off
    Fashion
    Yazoo
    Shriekback
    Talking Heads

That should be long enough and varied enough to keep you busy for a while!
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.
  • There's some good stuff in here, chaps. Keep it coming.

For a cultural reference point, I used to get home from school in time to listen to Roger Scott on Capital. Much influenced by his playlists, therefore: the Boss, the Eagles, Beach Boys, Loud Reed, the Kinks, Billy Joel, stuff in that vein, plus then Brit stuff like Squeeze, Dire Straits (has their stock taken a beating over time), XTC, Bowie. Plus oddities like 99 Luftballons und Echo Beach.

    This is Nostalgia Central...

Will add some of the above to the list, and if I can figure put, may post it somewhere in due course.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

Not familiar with Roger Scott's work. I was listening when Radio 1 was good, or had to put up with Red Dragon Radio.

    How about:

    Men at Work
    Pink Floyd
    Kraftwerk
Genesis (never listened to their earlier stuff, mind, so that's a blind suggestion)?
    FCN 2-4.

    The 80s S-H-U-D-D-E-R

    horrible period in time.
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.
  • My favorite record in the late Seventies was the debut album by the Cars. It was released in '78 and generated a couple of hits--Just What I Needed and My Best Friend's Girl--and later Moving in Stereo was featured in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And you still hear snippets of that album in ads and just about everywhere, it seems.

I always liked Geno by Dexys Midnight Runners. It's been completely overshadowed by Come on Eileen as far as airplay goes but is the far better track to my mind.
Lots of other stuff has been mentioned. Good shout for Ian Dury buy someone earlier.

Come On Eileen is quite probably the worst record ever made in the history of time. Gaah - I can't do with it. It did lead to one of the better witty tee-shirts though - "I Came On Eileen", spotted on a fat bloke's shirt last year..

I completely agree, I was trying to be polite. Another great song related Tshirt I saw was "Sex & Drugs & Sausage Rolls"
This could turn into a thread for song name puns.
