Weird bump in wheel

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help as I've drawn a blank. Bit of background info in case this is useful - I've had a few problems with slow punctures in one wheel lately. I finally think I've found the source of the punctures (a tiny piece of glass) but have discovered a new problem.

When cycling along it feels as though there is a bulge in one area of the tyre, so it's like cycling over a bump every metre or so. There definitely isn't a bulge in the tyre - I've tried changing both tyre and tube but the problem persists.

Is the problem with the wheel (it's a 6-month old Fulcrum Racing 7)? Any ideas what it might be?

Thanks for your help.

    Is the wheel round??

When u spin it can u see an obvious buckle / deformation either laterally or vertically??

Is it the rim joint? Depending on the make/model of the rim you may get a slight inconsistency where the rim is joined to form the hoop and now be aware of it after having the puncture

check the radial true... use a pencil held against the frame to give you a fixed point and spin the wheel, should be relatively clear.

Are your sure the tyre is bedded correctly into the well of the rim or the inner tube hasn't been kinked when fitted? Unless you've struck a pothole or kerb hard to distort the rim, 99% of such problems are due to the tyre / tube being incorrectly fitted.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Thanks for all the responses - i think I'm going to get the LBS to have a look at it. I think there's a buckle and I'm too lazy to faff with it.

    Cheers everyone!
  • It's easy enough to make a rough check on what might be out of true. Spin the wheel and look at the brake blocks. What moves laterally or radially with respect to the blocks ? If it's the rim, then that's the problem. If not, it's the tyre or tyre fitting.

is the inner tube the right size for the tire your using?

Yep, inner tubes are correct, and I'm fairly sure the tyre is seated correctly (I'm not with tyre at the moment hence the vagueness). i've been changing tyres and tubes for several years now without any probs but I will happily accept that I might have got it wrong on this occasion (I will check later!)
