Shimano 9 and 10 speed cross compatible?

Has any one had direct experience of mix and matching 9 and 10 speed SLX drive components? I seem to remember that Shimano says you can't but a recent chain set test said you can.
I want to make a 2 x 10 set up using a combination of new and existing parts. My plan is to use an SLX 10 speed cassette, rear mech, shifter and chain with an 9 speed SLX double and bash Chain set. I know that there is a 10 speed SLX triple chain set but they only do the double and bash in 9 speed.
My understanding is that the 10 speed chain has the same size internal dimesions as the 9 but the side plates are thinner.

looked in the FAQs?
it is covered there."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Blimey Nick you almost responded before I had posted! I did check the FAQ's and there is a good general guide in there. However, I really wanted to see if any one had actually tried the specific combo of parts or something close to it and had any tips.0
