I have a Marin Mount Vision 5.8 2008 , and have recently had a problem with the bearings on the rear swing arms. I was at Llandegla bike shop at the time and they advised me to take it to a Marin dealer as Marins have a lifetime guarentee.......however i bought the bike second hand and the previous owner hasnt got the original receipt. Would i still be able to get the bearing replaced without the receipt if i explain whats happend?

Cheers Ross

You have no entitlement to them. But if you are honest, they might just pop them in! Even if you have to pay, you will know it will be done properly, and the new bearings may be warrantied.
  • Try it!

Dont tell them it was 2nd tho.

Tell them it was a present.

Although I doubt that bearings and consumables will be covered by the waranty??
  • How much would it cost if i had to pay please???

I imagine about 20 quid for the bearings, and same again to fit them.
  • Ok thanks for you help :)

Marin have a lifetime warranty on bearings, not many manufacturers do warranty things like that, but marin most certainly do.

Ross_Davidson it's worth popping into your local Marin dealer and asking them about replacing the bearings, be nice and polite to them. If they ask about the receipt you could tell them that it has been lost, or through the washing machine or something like that.

If you have to pay it will depend on

    a) the cost of the bearings

    b) the cost of the labour

Without knowing what bearings they are & how many there are, or what the Marin dealer will charge for labour, it's impossible to say what it would cost if you did have to pay (unless someone on here has had to pay for the same work & replies to this topic.)

  • Well i was going to say i cant find it ....... but could they track the original buyer through their system??? or shall i just be totally onest and say i bought the frame second hand and the original owner hasnt got the receipt?

One should always be honest if they ask, otherwise just take it in and get it done. Often they don't bother, as Marin generally pick up the cost without question.

I've never been asked if I was the original owner of my old Marin. So, it strikes me that it's just not an issue.
I even snapped a swingarm in a bad crash, I was totally upfront with them, and they still replaced it for free, no quibbles.

The only "issue" I ever had was when I took it to a bike shop that was not a marin dealer. They said that they could give me the bearings for free, but if I wanted them to fit the bearings for me, they would have to charge me a tenner to fit them, since Marin's dealer reimbursement thing didn't apply to them, or something.
They might have been having me on, but I didn't mind to be honest.

Oh, and just doublecheck that it IS the swingarm bearings. I've often thought it was the bearings to blame, when it was actually the rear hub, or the DU bush thing on the rear shock.
