1 x 10 Am I missing the point?

Really fancy upgrading to a 1 x 10 set up.
The pluses seem fairly obvious. Less metal, less weight less complexity etc... However, with only one chainring will the chain nearly always be running across the cassette and chainring thus inducing a lot more wear and consequently require changing more frequently. I wear my drive chain parts heavily as it is. Will a 1 x 10 set be worse in this respect?
Any thoughts?

That's a downside to 1 x, you're not sharing the wear load. I'm now eeking the life out my cassette. Using (outer) biggest ring up front and don't use the 11/12t rear as much...0
