    looks like someone let it expire then renewed it for another 10 years before it dropped.

    you have about 30/60 days to renew after it expires before you lose it these days so you really have to drop the ball to lose it unexpectedly. the registrar might stop it resolving to your dns for those 30/60 days though if you don't cough up.
