I'm thinking about commuting to work using my Rockhopper. I have a road bike but want to use my MTB as I can fit panniers on it. Could anyone recommend good Mtb slick tyres I could use for my commute or should I just use the road bike with a rucksack?!?!?

Cheers!

  • When I used my MTB for commuting, I fitted a pair of Spesh Nimbus armadillos. Worked a treat, makes a huge difference and hardly got any punctures. On to my second set now, only bad point is that when coming to the end of their life, they've tended to "peel" from the centre tread outwards.

On a sidenote, I now mostly use my road bike for commuting. I've got some Conti Gatorskins on that, whihc are also great.

Try the spesh tyres though, you won't be disappointed.
  • Marathon+ last for 10k miles and you wont get any punctures.

    +1 for Marathon Pluses.

Armadillos I found too harsh a ride, and after six months wear I got a number of punctures from small slithers of flint and bits of glass that had worked their way through!

I wanted something lighter and got some WTB Slickasaurus, no claimed puncture protection but only one visit in 550miles so far and that was from a broken glass bottle where I cycle across the Uni campus.

  • I’ve had two sets of WTB Slickasaurus (1.5 and 1.1 width) and found them very, very fast rolling tyres. Cheap too. With both sets though I got several punctures in the first few weeks, then none for ages, then started to get them again once they’d started to wear. Probably depends where you ride.
I’m now using Specialized All-Condition Pro. Though narrower, they aren’t quite as fast as the WTB’s, and ride a little harsh but grip, brake and handle better, especially when it’s damp. Haven’t had a puncture yet.
Next set will probably Marathon though, punctures slow you down a lot more than rolling resistance!

Thanks for all of the advice. Still undecided as not sure if I want to go for fast tyres like the Gatorskins or durable ones like the Marathon+?!?! Is there a tyre which is both fast and durable??? (Will be mainly commuting on tarmac).
  • I use Schwalbe Big Apple 2.0" and just about have the clearances. They also come in 2.35". Seriously comfortable ride and excellent rolling ability.

+1 for the big apples. Comfy, quick enough and good pf resistance.
