Hi all,
Just been sitting here watching This
I've been wondering why haven't any major film studio tried to make a Mountain Bike Film, this would surely boost the popularity and eventually the amenities of the sport.
Yes most of the film would have special effects and most of the stuff would be unbelievable to the MTB crowd.
So anyone got any good storyline concepts?

I'm not sure how an MTB film would have a mass market appeal needed to capture the interest of a major film studio (and to get joe public to spend money to go and see it).

Doing well at the Banff film festival and going on tour is probably as wide spread (outside of the MTB community) as the interest will ever get (scenes from NWD10 certainly got a lot of attention at the last tour).

Do you think a major film studio could do better than Seasons or LifeCycles?

@GHill I believe it could, practically everyone owns a bike so that could draw them in potentially. But I can see what you mean, but like all things a good marketing strategy could draw anyone in.(Look at the idiots buying bottled water even though they have a tap at home)
It just needs a really good storyline, and the Loser becoming world class storyline is kinda getting old.

Hot female DHr collides with a truck while on a training ride  and is rebuilt using bionic parts.

The evil Dr.Commencal clones her and plans take over the world.

Some hot female DHrs rescue her and escape by covering themselves in chocolate sauce which dissolves their clothes.

Dr.Commencal narrowly escapes and goes to work for Boardman bikes.

There is a few minutes of mountain biking (well, cross country kind of stuff) towards the beginning of 127 hours... though the film is more about the climbing side. There have been films about other 'minority' sports so it could be entirely possible e.g. Blue Crush, although the attraction of that might not have been the actual surfing ;-)

ps I don't want the sport benefitted - there are already enough people on the trails.

We need Keanu Reeves, fighting a downhill biking crime syndicate. Possibly led by Vin Diesel.

erm there may be more people on trails, but that will also result in more trails hopefully.

I've read the book :) Can't wait to see the film, what do you think of it.
  • A major movie would be great. I don't know how it is in the UK and all, but over here
in the states there are virtually no television addvertising for bikes. Just think, if even a
few bike companies got together and decided to put a up some capital for a national
bicycle commercial what an impact that would have. They could just show generic
bike riding in all its forms, from BMX, DH,XC, to road and casual beach cruisers.
Of course even if one company did it, providing they had the money, they would
certainly highlight there own brand. Either way, look at all the auto commercials, noe if that could be Bikes. Yikes!

  • A set peice in the next Bond film would be a good start. Get the Collective/Anthill guys in as second unit and let them do their thing.

But a full on MTB film from Hollywood would end up gash. xXx, Blue Crush...I'm looking at you.

Point Break is the only exception I can think of.

Films that have a pure sport theme and are decent are rare beasts.

I reckon The Eiger Sanction, is one of them.
I'm going to blow the bank on a new build ( within reason ) NOW DONE!!

Well what would be cool if there was a mission on COD where you had to cycle through some terrain to get to your mission objective.
But yeah a film soley based on a sport would be pretty crap unless it had other elements.
@Crazybear Good thinking, lets hope it happens

It was very cool. Slightly quirky in parts which I think was good. Makes you want to make sure you NEVER go off riding on your own without a phone and without telling someone where you are!!

Does anyone not do this anymore? I always cary a phone and at least tell one person where I am, though in the book it blatently mentions he doesn't have a mobile phone and that the trip wasn't planned.

Would be really good if the sport got more popular so there will be more routes. There is hardly any technical routes down here in Bedfordshire, except Chicksands.

    .
And they only have fully rigid bikes over rough terrain with slo-mo shots galore.
