Ice spike tyres

Has anyone out there had any experience using tires with ice spikes? With there being quite a lot of ice about on untreated roads that I commute to work on, I was wondering if many people out there have any real world experience of these tires.

I have some, but no experience of using them - the ice disappeared the day I got them! Try the Commuting section - a few of them used them towards the end of last year.

For sure - I ride on them everyday at this time of year - Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pros - superb. I've never had a "moment" of any sort on them in about 600 miles of use.

They are noisy (turns heads) and quite high rolling resistance (I run them at max pressure) but they inspire total confidence. I've tested them on all sorts of surfaces. The only conditions that thwart them is deep snow when you just lose traction.

I use them on my MTB, grip is amazing even with hard packed ice, when it's really think you do get that slip/grip thing going on which takes a little while to get used to.

I actually just took mine off today, they're very heavy and i need all the help I can get.

If you're set on cycling on ice then it'll be a good investment but be warned avoid disappointment and buy before the weather turns cold.
