Any recommedations for the above?

Was thinking of a Specialized BG Romin or Selle XO Airflow...

Any stories to confirm choice?

Hi, much like dating a lady, finding the right saddle is time-consuming and expensive, but will ultimately benefit your riding greatly...
It's really difficult to make recommendations as they're so personal. The only way is to try a few out and see what works best for you. Some shops have test models for you to try, which is very useful. Or you could borrow a friends.

Are we still talking saddles?? If not, it's only OK to borrow a friend's if you can be sure he won't find out.

It's a little unconventional and expensive, but I can confirm that the Selle SMP saddles have worked wonders for me. I was at the point where doctors told me to stop cycling due to injury in that region, but this saddle has made it possible to continue riding pain-free.

But as others will tell you - saddles are a personal thing and the more you can try, the better.

I was in a shop recently and they had a full range of Fizik and Prologo saddles available to try before you buy (they are green in color to distinguish them from retail models). Look around and you may find a shop that has demo models.
  • i have just fitted a romin to my bike as i have been getting rubbing sore and pressure probs! even though i have tried Selle italia gel flow flite and flite max saddles, arione, san marco zoncolon and one or 2 others that havent really helped. However i used the romin for the first time sat morning for a 70 miler. It felt rather firm but i havent had an side effects from it. I obviously need to try t more but i think it will be a keeper! shame the padding is alittle more.
  • San Marco Rolls is nice a comfy (for me), but not very racey
San Marco SKN is nice a light and good for weight weenies
... and I have one for sale on Ebay - (search for item number: 290522433601)
It all gets very, very personal when you talk about saddles
    ... must train harder

The Romin is the best road saddle I've ever used, however it wouldn't surprise me if some people didn't get on with it so if you can I'd get a demo one to try (I know Spesh concept stores have them, dunno about normal Spesh dealers though)

I updgraded from the awful std boardman saddle to a relatively cheap charge one on the recommendation of a friend who does lots of cycling. It made a big difference to my comfort.

However the biggest difference I have had to comfort was from upgrading my cycling shorts to a pair of Assos F1 Uno. bib shorts. The chamois in those shorts made more of a difference to my comfort than the saddle ever did.

I can now do 60 mile ride in complete comfort. Have come on a long way since september when I was uncomfortable on an 8 mile with rubbing shilst wearing £5 aldi shorts with my underpants on underneath

Now a fully commando style chamois creamed up smooth rider :)

I like the Romin, having tried Charge Spoon and Fizik Arione before. It seems to suit me well, with none of the numbness that the others tended to produce after a couple of hours. Check on the sizing, though - I think that will make a big difference.

The romins a great saddle. I had a perfectly good saddle but thought i'd try the romin after reading so many good reviews. It supports your weight evenly with no pressure points. Comfortable on the hoods and in the drops. Reasonably priced too, the standard model is about £40.

Could't recommend the romin more highly.

  • Get a bike fit. There is very little difference in most saddles but how it is orientated and how you sit on it is down to the fit of the bike. I would definitely having just seen the difference a good fit makes. Even a cheap boardman saddle can appear to be a new saddle after a proper bike fit.

Selle SMP TRK saddles have been good for my bum for the last 4 years.

They have a very large central cutout but I really struggled to ride over 50 miles with several saddles before discovering these. There are several models available but the cheapest is only £21.50.

I understand Mark Beaumont used one of the more expensive models when riding around the world.

I really cant tell the difference between shorts for comfort.

Charge Spoon is ridiculously good value and comfy for me - but yes - everyones different.

What tyres and PSI are you using too ?

Choosing a saddle is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman. Its got to look good and feel right - and you've got to ride for at least 10 minutes before you know if you're compatible.
