Hmmm, lost half my post there, so here it goes:

On a more serious note, as others have observed already, it's unlikely that you'll ever buy your "forever" bike. At some point you're going to fancy another frame. Your Campag groupset however, will more or less last you a lifetime, so it's worth investing in that. Though it doesn't need to be SR. As suggested above, better spend the money on some fancy wheels if you want your bike to "wow" you every time...

Ha ha liking the last few posts. neeb I think you may be right about Record and i think that's still my preference. Elio, your Whisper is damn fine. I've got Zipp bars and stem that I really like, but I think I'm going to have to ditch them for Deda like yours to keep the team replica thing going.

I already have some new Cosmic Carbones so I'm happy with wheels.

Record 2010 groupset bought from Merlin for £900, should be here tomorrow.

I'm really quite excited about opening all the boxes.

I didn't know this. Ugh. Why do they do that?! My seven year old Centaur levers can cover at least half of the cassette in one throw, both directions- and Athena is ostensibly more expensive. (Didn't they do a similar gaffe a few years back, in 2006 or so?)

Big screw up for me. They had it right before - Centaur as a quality 10 speed, Athena as the bargain 11 speed. If I was buying a bike now, I'd either source 2010 Campag or go SRAM. I don't see the cost justification for Chorus but I like the multishift capability. So basically, Campag don't make either of the groupsets I'd be interested in anymore.

Even my 2009 10sp Centaur shifters can do that. They seem to be functionally identical to my 2010 11sp Record ones (minus the 1 extra click). They even look better IMO, with the centaur logo in nice bolt white lettering instead of the reverse-stencil-fade graphic of 2010 Record.

So glad I got those 2009 Centaur shifters when I did - great replacement for the pre-2009 (different shaped) 10sp ergos in an old chorus groupset. Still, the original chorus shifters could dump all 10 gears in one go (to be honest though, I never used this).

very good price, got my athena from merlin at a good price too. Now buy a tiso upgrade kit. No benefit they just make the group extra sexy.

Good choice (and a good price)! This will be a great bike... Please show us some photos when you're done.

BTW, if you're looking for Deda bars and stem, I still have some 'left overs'. PM me if you're interested.

Wow nice bike FT - couldn't help noticing the celeste worktops, did you subconsciously want a Bianchi instead of a new kitchen when you bought them?
2011 Bianchi D2 Cavaria in celeste (of course!)

Beautiful bike! I love that Guerciotti paint scheme, especially the curly spiral on the ISP. Very classy, I'm envious! My Scuro RS was from Alpina Giro, but if the Guercottis had been more affordable at the time I bought it I'd definitely have gone for one of those instead.

    Here's mine:

  • Lovely looking bike. When I was looking for a new project, the mark up with PX/Guerciotti was over 100%+ now it's a few hundred quid, still criminal, but not totally unrealistic.

In fact the PX Guerciottis are now only about £130 more than the Ribble Scuro RSs - the Ribble price doesn't include the fork and headset which are priced separately. That's an absolute bargain for a great frame with a prestigious Italian name on it - but I see they are being snapped up rather quickly! :)

"Powertorque is easy to fit, less easy to remove for maintenance than Ultra Torque but my understanding is that it is more tolerant of badly made BB shells, alignment or width"

It is certainly easier to fit for the OEs and given the correct tools, maintenance is easy - but it is no more tolerant than any other external-type BB assembly from Campag or any other manufacturer (with the possible exception of Rotor) of mis-aligned threads, poorly faced or otherwise out-of-spec BB shells.
