Sram named shifters will work with shimano rear mechs.

SRAM Attack 8sp is most excellent with XT - better than an XT shifter IMO

The SRAM attack or Centera twist shifts are quite nice, a twist shift is a nice way to declutter the bars which can be handy on something used for touring, I now have a twister on my commuter for that reason (and it's lighter than triggers)

SRAM X9 and X0 shifters do not work with Shimano rear derailluer since they pull a different amount of cable.
