Avid Juicy 7 lever problems...

My rear brake is a Juicy 7 (2008 I think). Since installing new wider grips, the lever is now engaging too close to the new grips, so I tried to turn the contact adjuster and it is stuck rigid! no movement at all My bike is out of warranty now, and I am fairly spanner savvy and like to do my own maintenance anyway - so has anyone got any ideas what the problem could be? or how to tackle it?
Many thanks
Neil
ps. I've just bled some air out of the system which has helped a little - but the lever is still crushing my other fingers a little.

strip and clean. but try the reach adjust first."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yeah, It looks like I'll have to strip down the lever and see what's going on
If I end up buggering it up - can I buy a replacement lever? or will I have to buy the complete system? Also.... Will a different lever work - e.g. shimano etc?
Cheers

you would need to use a make and model and year compatible lever.
but as said you have a number of adjustments to try first."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

FIXED IT!!! I'm well chuffed lol
I removed the lever, then removed a small circlip, this allowed me to unscrew an internal adjuster (sorry for my lack of correct terminology). I removed the adjuster and discovered the problem - It looks like a production defect... a mm of thread had come away from the ajuster body and was causing it to jam. I picked out this fragment of thread, gave everything a good clean and put it all back together, and now it all works smoothly!!! And I saved some cash.0
