SLX Shadow - which jockey wheels?

edited January 2011 in MTB workshop & tech
My jockey wheels on my SLX Shadow rear mech now resemble throwing stars and need replacing.

However I'm not really sure what to buy. Looking on Shimano's web site there are some tech manuals though I'm not sure which applies. I'm assuming the SLX Shadow is an RD-M662. Though there's also an RD-M663 SGS but I've not seen anything to indicate that's what I've got. There's a document mentioning part numbers but I can't seem to find them. I can find a bolt set for the M662 but not the pulleys (searching for m662 pulleys, jockeys or by part number Y-5VN 98020).

Any idea what I should be looking for, and do I need to get the bolt set also (and any special tools required to fit them)?

Oh and the installation manuals don't show how to fit them either. Never done jockey wheels.

SGS just refers to the cage length, jockey wheels are all the same. Bolts will be fine.
Easy job, just unscrew (small allen bolt, goes through one side of the cage and screws into the other side.), remove wheel, put new one in, screw it up, job done. Don't even have to remove the chain.
Thel33ter will probably google you some instead of working.
We could stick them in in the carpark in 5 minutes.

    Sounds simple then.

So something off this page would do? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... odelID=885

    (hopefully the £2.99 ones).

You could always get some BBB Rollerboys. Providing the number of teeth is the same, they come with a little matrix of inserts to fit every mech every made.

While they're not exactly KCNC they work fine.

I went for these, which have been faultless for the last 6 months (although delivery took a while, but my purchase was purely aesthetic) :)

I think I may have some laying about in the toolbox at home DK (just normal ones from an XT mech. Slightly used, but will still work perfectly).

I can have a look tonight if you want? Yours for the cost of petrol to Aldershot :)

Edit: Going home now, you have PM.

The LX ones one that page will work fine. Basically any Shimano 9 speed. XT are nice and have a ceramic bearing on the upper pulley, but whether that's worth all the extra dosh is debatable. So £2.99 each

Those ones Stav linked to would go well with the other red blingy bits you fitted. The offer of XT wheels is also rather nice. They are better. Bearings instead of bushings I think.

Writing this on my ps3, so will keep it short.. (laptops broken) the xt ones i have (found them after much digging about!) are sealed ceramic bearings, one is brand new, the other has done 50 miles tops.. :)

The red ebay ones have done me well, and roll pretty quietly too, it's just delivery that takes ages, and they're not ceramic bearings, but they look good!

As I'm pretty local, I'm happy to help a fellow rider! Who knows, meeting one of you guys might even encourage me to join a Surrey Hills session!

A generous person giving away stuff will always be welcome on our rides. I'm looking for a small pile (approx 6' or so) of tenners if you have any lying around.
Check out London Calling in Rides. Always good to meet new faces. Although I might be out of action for a week or two. (By action I mean pootling along at the back of the group)

Lol, cheers cooldad, I've got loads of little bits like that laying about, a few bits of carbon too, but thats not free!

I did read you had a stack, but you'd probably still ride quicker than me! Not been out for a month now (Medical reasons), and feeling it!!

I would be willing to have a slow ride competition just to see. But when you are ready - we ride for fun (or that's the idea anyway), spend a lot of time chatting. Popstar brings his knitting along.
DK and I know all the chicken runs, and we wait for the slowest person at the top and bottom of hills ie me.

Cooldad, thanks buddy, once I'm better, I'll get my as$ in gear.. been riding SH for years now, so know most of it except Leith. Sadly my usual riding buds have either moved abroad, or discovered fishing..

I'm not the best rider, but willing to try most things.. It might just take me a while to find my balls again after this long off! Chilled sounds great.

Anyway, shalll pop to the london thread once I'm healed up to arrange something :)

DK, I'm at home every night this week if you did want the jockey wheels mate.

Meant to reply earlier. I'd already placed an order for the cheapy LX ones as I was getting some other bits and pieces.

Cheers for the offer though. Missed out on a bargain it seems! Still, if we meet up on a ride I don't mind taking them off your hands to use as spares :D

Haha, no worries mate, next time you need anything, can't hurt to ask me, I might just have a spare! (hoarding has benefits!!)

As above, when better, shall sort out joining you guys for a spin. :)
