Hi there,

After a back injury and having a bit of a niggle still, I have not been out cycling for some months now - which is doing my head in.

In the meantime, my bed/matress could be doing with replacing (being a single guy) I sleep in the middle of my king bed thus making a bit of a dip. Its out of the silentnight 5 year warranty and is only 6 or 7 years old.

Can anyone reccomend a good matress for a bad back please, I of course try myself in the shops but any pointers would be good. I saw this advertised in a mag, but it might be a gimic...

Thanks!

  • Looking at your location, get yourself into John Lewis in Glasgow, and try out some of their own-brand pocket-sprung mattresses. Don't worry about looking like a plonker lying on them - it's the only way you'll know if you'll like it or not!! Also, buy the most expensive one you can afford.

Previously, I was using a memory foam mattress for about 4 years. All the advertising blurb suggested it was the best thing since sliced bread. However, in my experience they offer poor temperature control and ventilation. I changed to a pocket sprung, and what a pleasure it is to use.

Don't you flip your mattress every now and then?

if you're single - sleep sideways across the bed - that way you'll avoid the lengthwise dip!

Just have a look at Hypnos mattresses and the ortho support range, and for gods sake don't buy a bloody 'memory foam' thing, Damn things.

I did turn it every now and then, even though its a 'no turn'. When my Dad was away I tried his memory foam thing and thought I was in quicksand, it felt sore turning over etc.

Ill check those John Lewis ones, and give Silentnight a miss this time...

Best get clean socks on and go out and jump on some beds!

  • We got our bed and mattress from John Lewis about 8 years ago. It was quite expensive, about £1,500 for the two IIRC, but has been worth every penny. The mattress was about £700 and is one of the Hypnos no turn ones. We turn it around every couple of months, but never turn it upside down, and don't have any dips in it at all.
John Lewis were very, very good at advising the best way to test if a mattress was suitable for you needs, so can only recommend you go to them, as above, and get some advice.

  • Just got a pocket sprung mattress and it was a bit uncomfortable the first couple of nights but is bliss now.

Tried a memory foam but found it really hot and like sleeping in wet sand.

I do indeed, I think they will come in for a snuggle now though. Gave my MTB a clean to get dust off it, and cant resist its glossy frame

I got a silent night miracoil7 with easy breathe memory foam.
Its pocket sprung with a thinish layer of memory foam ontop.
    Best of both worlds really.
You cant turn it over due to the foam being on one side only.
I've found it to be fecking lovely, super comfy kipping FTW.
  • I too used to suffer severe back issues. We got a pocket sprung from 'And So To Bed'. The one we have has what is called a 'pillow top' which is a section of about two inches above the sprung part. This is filled with a mixture of wool and cashmere.

This feels great, and has helped my back a lot. They do cost (around £2.5K), but it was well worth it. They usually have a sale around this time of year.

My memory foam mattress wasn't very good. It forgot who I was.

This thread reminded me of a great lecture Bruce Sterling gave a while back.

What you use all the time. Get the best possible common everyday objects. Your bed! You’re spending a third of your life in the thing – you should go out and buy the best bed you can get. The sheets, the pillows, they’re pretty high up there too. And a chair.
