Hi Folks, Can anyone advise on life expectancy of an ultegra front mech, compact. Mine has done 4k and I seem to be having a few shifting problems despite everything being adjusted what I think is spot on. I have new chain and running FSA chain rings 50/34 on a SRAM Truvativ crank.

Cheers Spagforth :?

Dirt in the mech or cable I would think.

I would expect 20-30 years out of a front mech, and then only bin it because something lighter and flashier was about.

Unless it's been mangled or cage worn-through due to chain rub (poor alignment), then there's very little to go wrong. 99.9% of front mech problems are due to poor set-up/ maintenance.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • on a lot of peoples bikes mine included, the front mech gets very little use because some people stick on the big ring and visa versa, so over time especially if used in winter, accumulated crud can cause them to stick or even seize causing poor shifting, if you dont use it much at all, its a good idea to operate it now and again to make sure it still works freely.
