Must get myself some clincher tyres for my race wheels.
What is out there? I've been using Vittoria open corsa evo CX for the last couple of years. Anything better out there now.

For clinchers - ditto the above.
  • Nothing better than CX to be honest.

I've used both, prefer Vittoria's for comfort, they cut up and wear slightly quicker than the Michelins though I'd say. Conti Force/Atttcks have an exciting feel and grip well though a bit harsh riding and wear out very quickly. Depends if you want a change really?

Yes there is - Veloflex. Nearest clincher you can get to the ride of a tubular

  • Not much in it to be honest. Veoflex use Vittorias tyre making equipment so the construction is similar but I would say that the 320tpi vittorias do have the edge on veloflex right now.

The corsa's are the nicest I've ridden on albeit I would mirror the comment about their longevity and cut resistance (or lack thereof!). The pro race 3's are very good but for me they are many times more difficult to fit onto my rims when the air fairies come and damage the tube.

my previous fav's were conti attack/force, as said above superb grip but wear very quickly, i've now gone back to mic pro race 3's which are the nuts.

Ilike the Conti,s too, but have just ordered the new Schwalbe Ultremo ZX in Red. Hop that they are as good as they look.

I've always used ProRace2s and 3s, and loved them (never had a problem fitting them either), and Krylion Carbons for winter use, but want to try the Vittoria Open Pave Evo CGs. But worth the extra cost? All round year tyre?

Better than the Open Corsas? Or just different and more for winter use?

Not sure if it is a weight thing or poor luck on the road but if my rims permitted it I would run the same combo of pro race and krylion through the year. I've just bought a pair of pave to replace the corsa's on my better weather wheels and I'm also keen to find out the answer to your question!

Poss. the Veloflex Open Record or Pave but they really work best on lovely smooth roads not potholed/flinty UK roads. Otherwise the Schwalbe/Michelin/Vittorias and it's down to personal choice

If it's racing tyres you're after I'm sure you'll want a high TPI tyre like the Open Corsas. However, there's a new tyre coming out from Panaracer called the Race Type L that looks pretty impressive. Only 185 too! And in all the time I've used Panaracers I've never had one wear out anything like as fast as my clubmates who use Open Corsas all year round. As the previous poster mentioned, don't forget the role of potholes and flints on tyre wear - especially for high TPI rubber.

    +1 the rubber of choice

+1 for the Michelin pro 3 aswell. 3600 miles out of the rear till it wore through. Front still has loads of miles on it and without any punctures.

Top rubber. Very grippy and fast rolling. I can lean the bike right over circuit racing.
  • The OP is talking about racing tyres. I would expect to change race tyres every couple of months, longevity isn't a massive factor. There seems to be a little confusion around training tyres - a good race tyre has different qualities that a racing tyre.
  • Thats right. Race tyres. But who wants to flat in a race! Good grip and puncture resistance is whats needed as well as the all out speed. Longevity is not such a big issue.

Pro race 3s for me. A great tyre and available in all colours.

But just get the black ones
