Hi,

I am looking for a cost effective alternative to brand pads that also give equal to similar performance. Is this possible? If so, where is best to get them from? I see quite a few sellers on ebay but I am a bit bewildered by the choice.

Thanks as always in advance.

Clarks and superstar. Chain reaction offer good deals on clarks pads, especially when bought in bulk, as do superstar. Some people (me included) have had issues fitting the superstar avid juicy pads, i've had no such issues with the clarks ones. Hope this helps.

Superstar Kevlar are nice in Elixir's, it's all I run in Elixir's (when I use them) unless the conditions are incredibly crap when you need as hard a pad as possible

Am I correct in presuming that all Avid brakes accept the same style of brakes?

No they're not. Looking on the Superstar website, there's four different shaped pads for Avids.

My new/original Avid Elixir R pads have lasted only 220 miles. They were good, but I was a little shocked to find them down to the metal so soon. After so many recommendations on this forum for the Superstar pads, I've now purchased a four pair pack of sintered pads for only £22.99. These pads are very hard. I've probably got to bed them in a little longer yet, but so far they do seem to need a harder press to get full braking, but that's no problem. You can still lockup the wheels easily enough. The braking is fine and they should last very much longer. If you want better braking, but less life, then go with the organic pads, or the kevlar for something in between.

    From the Superstar website:
    3 Superstar Compounds:
Organic - High power soft pad for great feel and power, excellent bite from cold
Sintered – Hard pads for long life in abrasive condition, extra long life
Kevlar – Soft race pad for ultimate power but Kevlar fibres give much longer life than Organic
