Neck & Shoulder Braces

Hi guys,

I had a bit of a run in with a car about a month and a half ago. My collar bone was smashed forwards by the windscreen, and there's a gap between it and the shoulder. I've also got a bit of whiplash, resulting in weaker muscles in my neck.

Anyway, back to the point - I went for the first ride today. I went down to the Forest of Dean trails, and had a go (very, very tentatively) at one of the DH trails. As anyone who'd ridden in the FoD would know, these trails are a long way from Fort William, and are only a minute and a half long at most. On the way down, my shoulder ached like crazy, and my neck would hardly hold itself up.

So I had a look at shoulder braces. 661 do a "shoulder stabiliser", which looks promising - has anyone ever tried one? I was also looking at neck braces (Leatt, Alpinestars etc) - will these help stabilise my neck while I'm recovering? I've been looking at a brace for safety's sake anyway...

Thanks.
I know not where I am going, my future will decide. But it's not the destination, it's the glory of the ride.

Be aware the Leatt braces are to be only used with a full face helmet and they are to stop your head moving through stopping the helmet moving by putting the load through your shoulders.

    Not a good idea.

I gathered the full face bit - I ride with one anyway. I hadn't quite thought through the shoulder thing though... Thanks.

The 661 looks similar to the EVS supports but for this kind of thing its possibly best to look beyond purely MTBing supports - there are many different kinds used by skiers and other athletes which might be more suitable. 661 are okay for body armour but following an injury I'd look for one made by a specialist medical equipment company.

Also, important, check with a physiotherapist who specialises in shoulder injuries. Using the wrong support could cause you lots of grief. Good luck - hope it gets strong again soon.
