cateye strada - magnet proximity

I've just fitted a wired cateye strada computer and am having issues with intermittent readouts.
The instructions say a maximum distance from magnet to reciever of 3mm - that's really tight!
i need to find about 5-10mm to acheive that sort of clearance, and that is with the magnets/sensors positioned at the narrowest spoke/chainstay/crank distances.
Has anyone else found this?
What is best to pad behind the sensors? insulation tape around the chainstay?

    I used to have one of these, doesn't the sensor rotate so you can position it closer to the wheel. I think there is a screw which you undo so the sensor csn be rotated.
