I quite like Rapha clothes, and I very much like the small-scale steel framebuilding cottage industry, and I'm even slightly fond of the "Portland Scene", even though they all seem to be just the best of friends! living in a snowy idyll.

    But, really.

This is all a bit much, isn't it? I know they're for people who don't know what "cool" really is because they paid attention at school, but can (for that reason) afford to pay somebody to assure them that they are, after all, the coolest of all. That's the same market that had cityfolk moving into ready-furnished factory-converted-loft-spaces in Shoreditch, years ago. The desperate monied uncool, and sharklike opportunist "stylists", have always suited each other well.

The trouble is, it's putting me off the totally ordinary bicycles (for transport, not racing) that I've always rather liked- by fetishising them.

FWIW these must be the most over-priced bikes that i,ve ever seen. For the same money you could buy a top quality bike from one of the better known manufacturers.

people sit in starbucks and drink the nasty brown liquid they pass off as coffee just because its cool to be seen in there, people get on a quirky bike , dress like a tw*t whilst paying through the nose for the privilege totally deluded in their own smugness, its nothing to do with liking the style but how others perceive you

Hmm, I like the Cinelli but for the money I'd sooner get a custom traditional geo Enigma Exstensor finished naked like my current steed and have enough left over for some pretty nice wheels. That would be more yum. IMO.

I loved the old, cream/blue coloured Classico they did and there was a nice looking ti bike in there at the end of the year.
  • the Cinelli xcr is marketed as scarce and cool and €3500 for frame and forks. I could think of a lot of frames I'd buy with that budget rather than that one. Not least a custom Enigma made from the same material but less than half the price.

Mate you're such a follower, I think you should probably shop at Condor.

Beautifully put. Rapha are leeches on the rich, flabby 50-ish bankers on £7k rigs who surround me at work. Both are happy with the relationship but it's hollow. There's no real underlying appreciation for anything. I stay far away from it but mainly because I was watching in the 70s and 80s; so paid attention at the time and don't need the remedial course in distilled, free-base cool.
    When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.
