... Despite not having made a studio album in over 20 years, Mark Knopfler's iconic ‘80s act have been dragged into a censorship row surrounding their most famous song, ‘Money For Nothing'. A watchdog in Canada has banned the track from being broadcast on their airwaves, after deeming it too offensive.

The ruling centres on lyrics in the track and the word "f****t", which features three times in the second verse. It reads: "The little f****t with the earring and the makeup. Yeah, buddy, that's his own hair. That little f****t's got his own jet airplane. That little f****t he's a millionaire".

Officials at the Canadian Broadcasts Standards Council are understood to have received an official complaint when an unedited version of the song, which won a Grammy for the Best Rock Performance and featured a landmark video, was aired in their country, where it topped the charts in 1986.

The panel were warned that ‘Money For Nothing' was "extremely offensive" to gay, lesbian and bisexual people and have now reached a similar conclusion. They decided that "f****t", when used to describe a homosexual man, is a word "that, even if entirely or marginally acceptable in earlier days, is no longer so." ...
Why? Just because one, ONE trumpet-nosed tosser's offended? Sometimes I dispair at the way the world's going.

I'm surprised this wasn't censored by the BBC around the same time "Fairytale in New York" fiasco a couple of Christmas's ago tbh.

    Sad and pathetic

Imust have missed that one, Flasheart.

I was surprised that there wasn't an outcry, several years ago, about a 'merkin kids show about a family of witches, where 2 of the aunt witches were singing 'shake your fanny, shake your fanny'.

It just shows that they've entirely missed Knopfler's point. Its about people slagging someone off and how the boy does good regardless aint it..?

Amazing band. Almost forgotten thesedays. One of the greatest guitarists I have ever heard.
  • canadian broadcast standards council, sounds like another load of wasters doing another "non job" trying to justify their own existance, cant find anything worthwhile to ban so go back decades to songs which alot of people cant even remember

In which case, what on earth will they make of In The Flesh by Pink Floyd from The Wall?
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

It's a recording of a rant he heard while in an electrical store in New York. One of the assistants was having a loud rant and he noted down the words and padded them out into the song. That's why it contained a phrase for gays that was more American than English.

They were, indeed, a great band. However, I never liked that particular track much.

Yeh I know the story but I thought he'd added his own meaning? I could be wrong.

Yeah not their best work, just the one MTV went mental over imo.

  • Canadians, eh. Aren't they a bit slow off the mark? I mean, the song's 25 years old.... :)

I'll second that. Sultans of swing was cringe worthy.

    Just so we all know.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council is an industry watchdog group, it is not, thankfully, a government legislative group.

Compliance with the order of the CBSC is entirely voluntary on the part of radio stations and most have already said they have no intention of doing so.

The real reason the CBSC have done this is to take the wind out of the sails of the complainants inevitable Human Rights Complaint where she will try to force the original radio station to pay her money to compensate her for the terrible damage her precious psyche has suffered by listening to words like faggot.

    Sad.

In the words of Shiela Broflovski............

    Times have changed
    Our kids are getting worse
    They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
    Should we blame the government?
    Or blame society?
Or should we blame the images on TV?
    No, blame Canada
    Blame Canada
With all their beady little eyes
And flapping heads so full of lies
    Blame Canada
    Blame Canada
We need to form a full assault
    It's Canada's fault!
    Don't blame me
    For my son Stan
    He saw the darn cartoon
And now he's off to join the Klan!
    And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to f*ck myself!
    Well, blame Canada
    Blame Canada
It seems that everything's gone wrong
    Since Canada came along
    Blame Canada
    Blame Canada
They're not even a real country anyway
My son could've been a doctor or a lawyer rich and true,
Instead he burned up like a piggy on the barbecue
    Should we blame the matches?
    Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
    heck no!
    Blame Canada
    Blame Canada
    With all their hockey hullabaloo
And that bitch Anne Murray too
    Blame Canada
    Shame on Canada
    For...
    The smut we must stop
    The trash we must bash
    The Laughter and fun
    Must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before somebody thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus!!!!
Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved

Never thought I'd see a link between Dire Straits and Lou Reed, however tenuous. Could be a disco smash though....you could remix, say, Satellite of Love with Twistin' by the Pool. What a mash up. :D
