Hi all,

I got a trek ex8 fs just after christmas, on the bases i would be going to trail centres and traveling out of town to good places to ride, ie lakes and peak district roughly once a month maybe more. But my wife and i have just found out she is having another baby, so i will have to tighten my belt alot, so the trips out every month will have to go.

Now where i live is pretty flat,(Grimsby) we have the lincolnshire wolds and that about it. So i think a FS will be wasted around here.

I have been thinking about selling the FS and getting a HT.
Since the EX8 is only 3 weeks old i should be able to sell it.

What would you do??

what are you hoping to achieve by selling the fs and replacing it with the ht?

are you hoping to make some money back from the sale? are you trying to have the most suitable bike for your riding?

second hand bikes are worth next to nowt compared to their retail prices no matter how long you have had it. you are better off keeping your bike.

You'll probably have lost money off the fuel just because it isn't 'new' any more, so I suppose it comes down to how much you can sell it for, how cheap a hardtail you'd go for and how much money that gives you. Would it be enough in the grand scheme of things to make it worth it?

The only other consideration would be that a fs would probably cost more to look after long term- how much, can't comment.

  • Personally, I'd keep it, you've paid for it and you wont get your money back. If you're not going to be able to give it a hammering every week, I wouldn't worry about the price of upkeep because you wont be doing much damage! I'm sure you'll be able to get away on it at some point in the future and when that time comes, you'll be glad you've still got the bike. :D

Keep it. You'll never get full value if you sell it and even if you make one trip a year at least you'll have a good bike and be able mto have fun.

i live near cambridge, which is at the edge of the fens, which is just stupid when it comes to how flat it is, but i ride my FS and love it. the only thing you will get from the HT is a bit more pedalling efficiency and a sorer arse when you sit down over bumps when you cant be bothered to stand.

keep it, you wont regret so when you go to a trail centre!

Theres not much point considering you wont save any money and you'd lose so much on rrp of the bike for being second hand. Congratulations though.

Hey Will, just i riding spot you may not know of, just across the bridge theres a ride in North Ferriby, makes the most of what hills they are its about a 14-16 miler but can be extended quite easily. Have a look in the rides section in the hull and surrounding areas.

And I'd keep it, i haven't rode my FS for months, but i'm hopefully moving to scotland in march so its always good to have it around. Plus, if you find yourself with some spare notes, you can always build up a HT and save the FS for centres/lakes/moors etc
  • Congratulations, all the best, keep the bike and get a child seat for the new addition and take him/her with you.

    Thanks for your input fellas,

I guess i willl be keeping my EX8, Which is good cos i do like it, just thought it would be wasted around these parts.

I guess new bikes are like new cars loose value straight away.

I was not after making any money on the sale of the FS, as i would off replaced it with atrek 8000 or 8500, i just wanted the right bike.

Like Eyon said at lease i wont have sore arse riding, and maybe i might get to the trail centres a few times over the year.

    Beneally, thanks mate.

    Cheers all, Will
  • Dude, definitely keep it!

No sense in selling it just cause you think it won't be perfectly suited to your riding style. It's a good bike, and no reason to change that.
  • will8.....get out int othe wolds near louth, some pretty good trails if you scout around, especially when it's muddy, used to be able to string a 4 hour ride together no issue

(i'm from skendleby....which is on the edge of the wolds)
