At the moment i am trying to fix up my old 8 speed specialized hardrock to use in the mud.I have a few daft questions.
Will the 9 speed shimano deore rear mech off my giant trance work on it or do i need an 8 speed specific rear mech?, it has a shimano 8 speed shifter. If so -
Can i replace the deore off the giant with something like a sram x7/9 using the deore shifter or would i need to buy a sram shifter as well?
I also need a new rear cassette on the spesh. Is the cassette lockring removal tool the same for shimano and sram cassettes ?Can you reccomend me a decent cheap 8 speed cassette?
Any help appreciated.Thanks.

9, 8 and 7 speed mechs work with 9, 8 and 7 rear cogs. Even less.
BUT...
The shifter speed MUST match the number of cogs. SRAM numbered shifters do not work with Shimano rear derailers. ie X7 will not work with Deore.0 -
Yes the lockring tool is the same for shimano and sram.
As for an 8 speed casstte i'd go to CRC or merlin and see what they have I imagine both of them wold probbly have some OEM stuff lying around.0 -
