Tyre Sizes?!?!

Afternoon All,
Wondering if anyone can help me with tyre sizes, despite trawling the internet I'm stil pretty baffled.
I've got a GT Traffic 3.0 which I use for commuting to work, current tyres are Schwalbe Road Cruisers 700 x 40 (42-622). After 3 Punctures this week I've decided to get some Marathon Plus, but seem to be struggling to find them in 700 x 40.
Can anyone advise if 700 x 38's will fit my rims or if this will cause me problems? Dont wanna shell out 50 odd quid only to find I messed up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Agreed, singularly unhelpful. Jeremy at least learn to link to Sheldon.0 -
Walkerp78, the 700 is the diameter so as long as you fit 700 (or 700C) tyres they will be fine. 40 is the width, 40mm in the original case. 38's are therefore slightly narrower so you will find them slightly faster (less weight) but slightly less forgiving. Going from 40-38 we're talking minimal difference though. You really want to MTFU and join the 23mm commuters :twisted:FCN3: Titanium Qoroz.0

basically you take the tyre off, measure the interior rim width in mm, and the range of tyres that will be safe on that rim are 1.4-2.2 times the interior rim with . for instance, take a common rim width for a hybrid , 19mm That will take at the smallest a 28mm and at the largest a 44mm (normally 700c) which refers to the diameter of the tyre I think (i think im wrong on that one, check sheldon), wut its widths you are asking about so..........15 miles each way commuter (soon to be 20)

Hee Hee...
I agree that the bottombracket.co.uk was unhelpful to the OP.
I should know. It's my site...
The Guide to Tyres is Bike Tyres 101
Aimed at less experienced riders who have just realised their bike actually has tyres
I think the '1.4-2.2 X rim internal measurement' method described above is correct - but too advanced (I think...) for the target audience of my page.
RIP Sheldon...
and I'd like to thank the poster above for his spirited defence!
