Firstly i know the opinions that i should save more and then spend more but i only wish to spend around £200 on wheels and have narrowed it down to:

Shimano rs30 http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... _RS30W.htm

or
Halo mercury
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/halo-mercury-fr ... n=products

or even
Mavic aksium
http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... r_1325.htm

or are these worth the extra
Shimano ultegra
http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... r_2111.htm

Thanks for any help you can give me John

    Hi,

I've just bought a set of these after a bit of research for my new project:

I'm certainly no expert but they looked good value.

The Shimano RS-30 very strong rim, but is just too too heavy. And the weight is all in the rims. Too much rotational weight to be considered, even just for training/commuting.

The Mavic Aksiums are quite reliable wheels for daily commuting and training. On balance I think you will find that most reviews find it quite good for the price.

The Shimano 6700 are the best of the lot you are considering. For the price I think you would be hard pushed to find better quality, and the weight is very close to the stated weight (I weighed it at an LBS and it came to only about 15g over). I am sure someone will be on the blower soon to recommend something like the P-X model B and such like, but I have found the model be too flexy at the rim.

I have never heard about the other model you are considering.

I think I'd go for the Halos or the 6700s if I were you (Fulcrum 3s out of stock at that price at Planet X too)

I know you don't want more options, but I was in the same position - looking for £200 wheels, and got these.

    Xero lite XR-1s.

Managed to get them for £180 in the end.

They were great when I went into the Pyrenees.

I had R30s on my old bike and the aksium on the current bike and prefer the aksiums

Can't speak for the XR-1's but I have the Xero Maravilloso wheels, which are a lovely anoldised red if that suits your colour scheme (it did mine until my frame got replaced under warranty and came back white/blue!).

They are good wheels - reliable and fairly light. I'm not that heavy so flexing isn't an issue for me.
  • Does anybody know how deep the shimano ultergra 6700 are i currently have 30mm deep wheels and have been told deep v wheels are better wheels to go for as i will be riding most weekends and doing atleast 3 100mile sportives this summer?
please forgive my lack of knowledge i began riding 18months ago but im only just really getting into it after buying a new bike. thanks.

    24mm f 23mm r on the ultegra wheels (read the description :P )

I've built up a set of halo wheels on my caad, bit nicer than the standard spec mercury ones though. My choice would be a set of pro-lites if you can find them. They're very well made, stiff enough if you're light, and relatively cheap.
  • Have you considered Pro-Lite Braccianos? Price v weight they seem unbeatable.Lots of positive feedback on previous threads.

  • Thanks guys, after looking at the reviews of the Pro-Lite Bracciano Wheelset i pretty much convinced to go with them they look good ( in black ) and are very highly rated by magazine reviews and owners of the wheelset oh and the 10 inner tubes i just bought with a long valve will still be prerfect lol. Just got to wait for them to be back in stock as CRC are £90 more than another site.
    Thanks once again, John

You posted a link to an empty basket - there was no way of telling which wheels you were suggesting.
