Thought I'd gotten away with it

After no less than three offs on Sunday due to black ice I thought I'd got away with minor scratches to the shifters and skewers. Few bruises on me like, but they mend themselves :)

I was on the turbo last night and glanced over to my CAAD9 wondering when I'd go out on it again when I saw it...

The light was just catching a nice... little... DING in the top tube...of course...now I'm sad :(

Feel free to commiserate, assure it's not the end of the World etc, or more seriously how many of you are in the same boat and have had no issues?
It's not massive and the tube is still in-line so I'm guessing it will survive if I keep an eye on it.

  • Got a little chip out of the paint on my top tube, down to bare metal and I have NO idea how it got there. Must remember to buy a touch up stick before it starts turning brown.

I find its always better when you do it yourself.... when someone else does it to your bike (as happened to my Kinesis at work)...

Look on it as a relief. Once you've opened the bottle, you can enjoy the wine. You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. What is a bedpost without notches? That sort of thinking.

Now you can stop worrying about how your bike looks and get on with enjoying pushing it to the limit of how it rides. :D

I think thats true. A bike can tell a story with all its marks, it gets character.

Three offs and a frame visibly compromised.

Can't be too careful mate. I'd have it back to the manufacturer for an ultrasound.

Don't use it until it's been given the all clear.

Oh well, at least it wasn't an expensive carbon frame. You've got away with something there.

    Agreed, but bare aluminium

What's the problem with bare aluminium...in other words, should I be worrying?

I reckon the damage is only cosmetic, ie the structural integrity of the frame is unaffected.

However, I know how you feel. I once let my Dekerf fall over against the iron upright of the garden fence. It resulted in a very small dent to the toptube. I felt like I'd been kicked in the nuts.

It's purely cosmetic, its 2 to 3mm of bare metal with no damage to the top tube itself. It's nothing, but it sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

Found a dent in my Allez Sport top tube about 4"-6" from the head tube after about 7/8 months. No one claims to know how it got there. I hadn't had an off up to that point but I suspect it took a knock/fall in the house.
Took it into the local Edinburgh Bike Co-op. Put it in a jig, checked alignment etc. and reckoned it was good to go but to take it back in if it worsened or was playing on my mind. Some clear nail varnish over the affected area and it was fine.
Put at least another 6,000 miles on it. The only thing catastrophic about said dent is to the re-sale opportunities.

I know I've not committed to or taken corners at the same speed/angle on either my Wilier or 'dale like I have on the since soiled Spesh. Not a wanton disregard or anything like that but I know I’ve braked later, leaned over further and stamped on the pedals earlier – particularly in the wet – on the Allez than I have on my other bikes.

    Only joking.

This is the kind of thing that keeps me awake at night too. But don't worry about it. Don't give it another thought, it's fine.

Yes, it's a handlebar ding. It lines up perfectly with the top bend of the bars when they swing round. Surprising how a padded handlebar could do that.
It's pretty minor really, top tube is straight and the top coat lacquer isn't even cracked so I'll just keep an eye on it.

Now I've broken the eggs for the omelette as you put it Pneumatic (not allowed bed post notches...Missus would get upset :D ) I'll ride it hard this year and see if I can demote it to a Winter trainer next year....I use it in all weathers at the moment

Mmm, "Mrs B, you know that dent on my frame it's playing on my mind, might be dangerous...need a new bike etc etc"
