While a great route and very scenic ; I have done most of it before . It’s certainly would be putting the time an effort in to prepare if I were a "recreational cyclist" and a decent amount of training would be required certainly for the 100 miler .

A few areas I can think that will challenge a few folks if the miles are not in the legs :-

The hill from Greenock up to Loch Tom is short but Very Steep more than 25% for 100m in one place if I recollect and must be a good 2 miles with average touching 10% .

The section from Largs up the "Haylie Brae" again would be a leg breaker for some and again will average around 10% for at least 1 mile and certainly over 8% for at least 2 miles ; its a busy road so getting off and walking is not a good idea especially with the tourist traffic in the summer.

The stretch heading out of Lochwinnoch while relativley not that steep can be a very Loonnnnnnng uphill drag .

Don’t mean to put anyone off as I said it’s a good route just take it seriously if your interested .

P.S. The upshot off all these upity bits is the going down . A mile or so after Loch Thom going down to Largs is a hoot for about 5 miles ( assuming you dont stop at the feedstation ) . The same with the 2 mile section going down into Dalry .

Looks good - although i'd probably be sticking to the 100k course

Had a knee op in Dec. & although the combination of the words "new, year & resolution" usually drive me mental, i'm planning on doing some longer rides as well as the 20 mile per day commute this year, all I need to do now is to get back on the bike!

It is basically a combination of two of my regular training loops :D Nice route though the old largs road is one of my favourites in the area, amazing the difference the first hill makes - at the bottom in greenock not exactly the worlds prettiest town up the top you could be in the highlands on a single track road all on your own and seemingly noone else around for miles.

Agree with you on the Haylie Brae bit - i like the climb but it can be unpleasant with alot of traffic and IMO it would have been better going up over the old moor road at Fairlie, much quieter.

Completely agree. The A760 is too busy a road for a charity event that may attract a broad spectrum of abilities.

I'm not sure if the route is clockwise or anticlockwise, but if it's the latter, any bets some people come a cropper on the narrow descent through Newton of Beltrees!!

  • Hi everyone,

Just joined although i've been surfing the site for a while now.

I used to be a mtb'er but haven't done it regularly for over a year now. Thinking about getting a new bike through C2W to get back out there and find my love for it again (and shift a good few lbs in the process hopefully).

Looking to set myself a target and was thinking of signing up for this. (The 100k one)

Is this a realistic goal if i start biking regularly again or am i kidding myself on?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers
You shall not pass! (Unless I'm knackered then I don't really care tbh)

Are you a local mate? In any of the clubs? I've recently joined Johnstone Wheelers and hopefully will get out on a run soon. I've still to tackle Haylie Brae which is a usual suspect on the club runs.
