well having now seen it I am not exactly quivering for the future, its looks HUGE and would be nothing like as fast or advanced as the typhoon or F-35. It looks like wierd.

It clearly hasn't been designed with dogfighting against those fighters in mind, though.

Besides, I'm sure the Chinese can continue buying Russian fighter jets for a good while yet.

Looks a bit of a mess - like a mixture of the f-22, f-35 and mig 31. Not convinced that the engines look particularly stealthy either.

Big advance for the Chinese though they were about 3 generations of plane behind NATO and Russia about a decade ago, they are catching up fast.

It's really impressive the way it blends in with the background...

The F35 is just a rebranded J20 for a quarter of the price. I heard it on jetfightingforum.net.

If it has the same build quality as Chinese motorbikes then I pity the poor sod that has to risk his life by taking it into the air.

Yeah. Combat pilots never risk their life when they take their combat plane into the air.

Doesn't matter how big it is if it's radar reflection is v.low (B2 is a big aircraft). If it works it can deliver standoff weapons nearer the target and then escape. Saying it doesn't work also means nothing. The Russians built the Foxbat(?) that was a Mach 2.5 strike aircraft and it's avionics used valve technology. The Americans believed it was obsolete technology until they saw that.

Saying it's badly made? Have you seen it close up and are you an airframe designer? Look at all the stuff that China now makes - that works. They've got scientists out around the world studying technology/medicine/banking etc. They have a large defence spend from their GDP. Might not be Lockheed or BAE but if it works......

ha, very true...but it's still one more risk too many for me!

    +1
It's job is to down the AEWACs support aircraft - without their powerful long-range radar emitters illuminating the skies from behind the front lines, the F22's passive radar is ineffective.
  • That is highly advanced stealth.

As you can see from the video it's stealth capability is actually it's ability to generate a thick fog for miles around so people can't see it coming.

I'm off to learn Chinese so I can grovel to our future new overlords in their own language.

Looks large enough to more like a fighter-bomber/strike fighter than air superiority like the J-10.

It's good to see that the air quality has improved in China.

I notice they've painted it brown to blend in with the atmosphere....

Or a long-range interdiction fighter: it would need to be able to carry enough fuel to reach and loiter for the opposing AEWACS, which would be far behind the front lines.

Hmm, not sure whether I want to go out on the bike or go dig my Sidewinder 2 FF out and re-install Falcon 4.0 now.

Nah it's just that Chinese people are small.

Look they even have a minature van.

Anyway, mildly racist stereotypes aside, i have no idea about planes but it'll be interesting to see if China begins to develop it's own industry for this sort of thing. Could be a little scary but it's only fair game considering how militarised the US are.

It was a slightly tongue in cheek remark regarding the aircraft but with regards to some consumer products that come out of China they still have a long way to go. I used the motorbike example due to the experience of watching a colleague at work taking ownership of one that barely lasted a year..it was appaling in terms of quality. No doubt they will catch up at some point however.

However, if you had picked iPhones as your example, Made in PRC would be rated excellent quality.

Not strictly a Chinese product however is it? It may be assembled there but it would probably be safe to say it doesn't use local design and QA knowledge. After all, BMW have a car factory in China don't they?

Good point, but as a electronic design engineer myself, I would say that manufacturing a mass-produced quality article is considerably harder than designing it. It’s easy to specify the finest materials, the most elaborate machining and the most complex assembly sequence – on paper. Actually doing it is more difficult.

I would be surprised if your colleague’s motorcycle was designed in China – it’s probably from an old Japanese or British blueprint. And the Chinese stealth plane is probably lifted from an American blueprint

Obviously lots of aerospace engineers/designers and radar specialists here!

The Chinese are very secretive about what they produce. The Americans are very boastful.

How good is the B2? The Americans will tell you it's great. Does anybody have unclassified data to back up these claims?

Having worked in Fighter Aviation for the last 14 years I wouldn't trust either manufacturers' or operators' claims about their products.
