Front Derailleur

A noob question here folks.
Just thinking about replacing my front derailler. I currently have an 8 speed shimano 2300 double. Would it matter if I replaced it with a 9 speed Sora double? Just want something cheap.
Also, my bike is a specialized Allez and therefore is a clamp on style. Does anyone know what the diameter of the clamp should be? Where can I find out. It's either 28.6mm/31.8 or a 34.9mm that I can order.
Cheers!

Can't see that changing the front mech from 8 to 9 would be a problem - not the greatest techie in the world though compared to others on this site.
This link seems to suggest that Allez models are 31.8mm band on mech

Cheers for that, seems 31.8mm is what I'm looking for.
I know that the chain diameter is different for 8/9 speed chains so just wondered if it would pose a problem, personally i reckon it would be ok but just wondered if anyone knows something I don't.

I have one for sale on Ebay right now!
(with a rear derailleur - so you could upgrade both)
Item number - 290521728277 - just add this into the search box... must train harder0 -
Is the original shimano derailleur knackered? - can't see why just changing the front mech to Sora is worth it at all.0

Yep the front one is knackered, the adjustment screws had lost their plastic thread and would unscrew themselves whilst riding. For the price of replacement screws it is just as easy to buy a new one.
I've just bought new cassette, rear derailleur etc so figured it would make sense. Got a Tiagra one in the end.If you do what you have always done, you will get what you always got....0 -
If you've bought a new cassette make sure you fit a new chain as well.
I've made the mistake of just fitting a new cassette before and cursed when trying to set up indexing, went back to LBS for a new chain, Bloke said he wondered how long it would take before I came back for a chain. Now use different LBS with more helpful staff who are willing to give out advice.0 -
Yep new chain waiting to be fitted too. Got some new wheels, brakes and cables too! It's been an expensive month. Everything has given up at once on me
Ah well, it's been well used so it can be justified. If you do what you have always done, you will get what you always got....0
