Hi,

Can someone reccomend a reasonably decent Rear Hub 6 Bolt Disc for less than £80?

my current deore one has gone for the third time, so I think it's time for a replacement.

I'm not sure if it's 32H or 36H as I'm not home.

Whole wheel or just the hub?

    What's 'gone'?

Just the hub, the rest of the wheel is fine. it pretty much just spins when i put weight on the bike but seems fine if i just rotate the pedals etc when off the bike, which is pretty useless really.

    Do you service the hubs?

If the hub is the problem unless you can build wheels, perhaps best to get a whole wheel already built - easily within budget.

I would do but for some reason I can't see any mavic 717's anywhere? and I'd prefer to have a matching wheelset

    try Merlin cycles

they are pretty good with wheel builds etc and you can specify what you want.
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.

+1 to this, if its spinning under load then its the freehub, which are dirt cheap. Had mine replaced a few weeks after getting my new bike and specialized payed for the replacement and labour. Anyway they are dirt cheap and get a shop to fit it for a fiver if you cant yourself.

what do you mena the current one has gone for the third time?

is it the same hub or you have replaced it twice with the same make/model?

the spinning round is due to the ratchets not engaging in the freehub - you can take it apart, clean and lube it or if the pawls (look it up) are worn, then you need a new free hub.

They are not that expensive, £ 20 .... but when I had one go - it worked out more cost effective to get a repalcement hub.

shimano hubs need a big allen key - think it is 8 or 10 mm to remove.

how come you have gone through 3 hubs? I went through that many but in 12 years on my daily commute bike so it did see some fair mileage on a dirt track.

same hub... had the wheels for over 2 years now... first time, I jet washed the wheel and it seized up... 2nd time hub cracked or something...

2 years sounds bloody good to me with no servicing!

I guess you just want an upgrade though

A whole new wheel is more cost effective that relacing a new hub into an existing rim with new spokes. For your budget I'd look at Superstar for cartridge bearing hubs, and Merlin for a XT hub built into a rim of your choice.

Personally, I would get a single Deore hub, and strip it for the axle, bearings, seals and freehub. Even get a QR.

    20 quid.
