The Forestry Commission say no due to snow and ice, but they've been saying that for weeks now ....

Is anyone riding it as am planning a trip in next fortnight or so.

Thanks

Still plenty of ice & snow with lots of fallen trees making the trails unrideable according to the locals

Might be OKish in a few weeks, depends how quick the snow thaws and the fallen trees get removed

  • Just got this from Forestry ....

...........the trails are closed due to compacted ice
and a large amount of fallen trees. We are working to clear the access
roads first before we can start on the trails. I would recommend
calling the visitor centre (01751 460295) a day or two before you are
going to travel. We will be able to give a more accurate opening time
    then.
I must stress that there is a lot of work to do so please do not travel
unless you have contacted us first.

Called in yesterday and the man on the booth said the the trails were still shut with fallen trees and ice, took this with a pinch of salt but decided to go do and epic on the moors which were ok but muddy and a few remaining snow drifts here and there, that was until we got into cropton forest.
 trees down all over the place and the main fire road and the tarmac road down to levisham station was sheet ice about 4" of ice
Nearly fell off countless times which we both found amusing at first till we both went down hard within 5 minutes of each other.
So anyway i would imagine dalby is in the same state as they are both near each other so i can see why they shut it

hi birchy.....looking at going up on the moors this weekend, did you do the flyingdales route out of mbr by any chance?

Altern-8, Its most probably is the same one start at the hole of horcum over to fylingdales, loop round cross the whitby road through the old quarries that run adjacent to that little back road then down the permissive path to goathland up over goathland moor into cropton to levisham and back up on to the top to the start.
For a heads up on fylingdales moor top its a bit muddy but not bad going the climb up onto the top of goathland moor was a bit of nightmare but we had a major head on wind to cope with as well the mud.
But like i said cropton was leathel when you got down to fireroad/road that runs next to train tracks
Apart from that bit its all rideable :)
Going up to Danby this weekend i think as its got a fair bit more hard pack along the Cleveland way and you mainly stay on top of the moors.
  • We went to Dalby yesterday to see what it was like and the trails are still most definately closed due to ice and lots and lots of fallen trees, we attempted bits but too icey, the fire roads are bad as well it really is a no go at present. Just had more hard frosts as well the last couple of nights so conditions are not going to improve quickly.

  • Scary Biscuit ............

Was thinking of rescheduling my Dalby trip to the end of Feb.

From what you saw yesterday do you think they'll be sorted by then ?
  • Pastasauce, I would hope that by the end of Feb the trails would be open but it all depends on the weather i suspect. There are alot of fallen trees and its still very icey in these parts. Keep your eyes on the FC website for updates. If i get there in the next couple of weeks i will post and let you know. Scary Biscuit
  • I was up there at the weekend just gone and joined the red route from bickley car park. Followed it down to the diversion and rejoined it. the only bit that was closed was the single track down past the bomb holes and a couple of the valleys near the end. i would say 3/4s of the trail is open and still good for a couple of hours riding.

I also use a shortened route from bickley car park round the red route but divert to dixons hollow then pick up the red again around to crosscliffe and back to the car park, good for a hour hard training or 2 if u do another lap, therer where no closures at all around that bit.

I was also up just after the snow started to clear and me and my mate seeing we couldnt ride too far started clearing sections, dont think the forestry commision would agree with it but a bit of self help might of had the whole trail open again. Obviously the big trees would need them to do it.

Do you have a gpx file of that route? I ride up that way a fair bit, but tend to stick to the same routes and could do with a change :)

Dalby is now open, apart from a few escape routes
