Full mudguards and disc brakes

Hi, Probably one of those age old questions but I have been unable to find a satisfactory answer on any of the forums and broken links I've been trawling through for the last week.

I have just bought a Carrera Subway LTD from Halfords for commuting to work on and ordered some SKS Bluemels mudguards from Chain Reaction Cycles.

The bike has Shimano Cable Disc brakes front and rear and the frame and fork has the appropriate eyelets for installing full mud guards but the brake calipers are very much in the way. All of the suggestions I have found have said that bending the support stays is the best method but I am reluctant to do this for fear of having it all look wonky and having to shell out for replacement stays. I really can't believe that nobody makes any kind of adaptors for this job? Every suggestion I have come across involves a botch job and none of the mudguard manufacturers make full mudguards specifically for bikes with Disc Brakes fitted.

If that's not a niche in the market for a manufacturer, I really don't know what is. Almost wish I was back in the good old metal working shop at college again.

Does anyone have any suggestions of places selling adapters, brackets or disc-specific full mudguards, or at least close-up pictures at their attempts at bending the stays?

Thanks

  • I don't have pics, but have been left with pretty good results from using 2 small ring spanners to bend stays just where I want to, and to the right angle. A bit of patience, some planning and gentle application of brute force. Good Luck

If you're too timid to fit these things then send them back and get a pair from a good lbs who will either fit them for free or a small charge.

Alternatively take the pair you already have and ask a LBS to fit them for a fee.

I have a Madison rack, got it from All Terrain for about £18, disc specific (it has spacers to push the bottom arms out).

    EDIT: http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/110553.html

Before that I had a steel rack which I bent the arms out on and then used long bolts and lock nuts on!

As for mudguards, the Madison rack has an integral guard and I use a seatstay brace mounted one to cover down the seat tube.

My LBS bent the front stay to route under the brake caliper. I'll try and post a pic. It looks fine but I think he used 700c hybrid fenders on my 26" wheel bike to get a longer stay.
  • I would use a set of P clips and attach the guards to the seat stays above the disc brakes.

Did you get any resolution to this snoopy? I have the same problem and haven't come to a conclusion yet. I think it's crazy that sks do not market these as either disc friendly/unfriendly.

Could someone please provide a photo of how they fit their sks bluemels to their carrera subway (ltd edition) - I have the black/green/white one. I would be very grateful!
