  • I was new to them last year,I think it's pretty straightforward ,I can tell you what I did... :D
The first time out I set them all on the lowest setting to make sure I could "escape",and as I continued to use them I adjusted them 1/2 a turn at a time,I kept trying to pull them out and relocating..
I adjusted them until I could pull them out with a force I was happy with they weren't too lose so they didn't detatch under pressure but also I could pull them out in emergencies=QuIcK... :D
It will depend on the cleats you are usingalso.
If you have spd's you can get the side release or the side and upward release versions.

mine are side release , but they were too tight to release easily so i will try what you said and adjust them right down , so in theary they should just get easier to release side ways rather than pulling out on a pedal stroke ,
  • If they are only side release I don't think you're suposed to be able to pull them up and out..I could be corrected though??

Unless you are using the SPD multi release cleats you should not be able to pull out accidently even on the lowest setting. If you do it is probably down to poor pedaling technique with excessive twisting. SPD do get a bit sloppy when they wear but should still hold OK. I still have most of my pedals set to a low setting with no trouble.

    That's what I meant...
