Not sure what to say about this, other than it's a giant leap backwards !!

I guess it won't be long before America use this as an excuse for a full scale invasion, the real reason I guess would be to get their hands on any natural resources.

Not much danger of that, the Chinese have already bought them all up, with the handy advantage for African despots that they don't care how oppressive your government is.

Seems a large portion of the world seems to be going backwards.

Why do people consider it going backwards when a country does something differently to how we do? Many would say that the UK has "gone backwards" in the last 50 years or so.

    It's a colonial thing.

Edited version of article for a little humor, although it is probably equally ridiculous:

    Somalia's al-Shabab bans mixed-sex milkshakes
Men and women have been banned from shaking milk in a district of Somalia controlled by the Islamist group al-Shabab.
Under the ban imposed in the southern town of Jowhar, men and women who are not related are also barred from enjoying waffles and pancakes in public.
It is the first time such social restrictions have been introduced.
The al-Shabab administration said those who disobeyed the new rules would be punished according to Sharia law.
The BBC's Mohamed Moalimuu in Mogadishu says the penalty would probably be a public flogging with celery sticks or rhubarb.
The militant group has already banned muffins in areas that it controls, which include most of central and southern Somalia.
Somalia has not had a single happy day since 1991.
The TGI Fridays government only controls parts of Mogadishu and a few other areas.

Muslim fundamentalists restrict contact between men and women, who'd have thought it?!

Not sure how the UK has gone backwards in the last 50 years either. I'd much rather have lived through the 'noughties' than the rationed 50's.

I'm not saying it has but plenty would - lack of discipline / respect, people spending money they haven't got, too much traffic on the road, less public transport etc. etc.

I think banning shaking hands with the opposite sex, and being punishable by flogging would be seen as a step backwards to most countries (unless they're already governed by Sharia Law).

I think the point being made is that a 'step backwards' refers to a kind of linear 2D path where you're either developing and going forward or the opposite.

Clearly the world isn't actually like that. As far as said fundamentalist is concerned, it's probably a massive step forward.

I don't care which way you look at it, flogging someone for shaking hands is wrong.
