Chain slipping

Old MTB in process of becoming a commuter. Bought a new chain and fitted it today. Havent been on this bike for years. Cycled up and down a hill no bother but on the flat the chain felt like it was slipping. Checked and listened to rear derailleur on a workstand and gear changes are all fine. No delay and no chattering. I havent replaced the cassette. I wonder if it's worn causing the chain to slip. Is that likely?

Yes! They wear together; some people prolong the life of the parts by swapping a few chains around on the same cassette (on the premise that a chain costs less than a new cassette).

Sounds like you need a new cassette ( gears) as well , they wear with the chain and if they get worn to much then anew chain will not match to wear and jump under pressure, i had the exact same problem.
