I'm contemplating a new set of wheels, which I would like to use on my Cannondale Slice 105 and my Boardman Carbon Team Pro (SRAM). I'm currently looking at the Shimano's as an option - as most of my events for the year are pretty hilly and long - I was looking at advice on the best options.

Cheers

Just to add to your confusion, Shimano are introducing their 7900 range of wheels which pretty much replicate the 7850 models but also adds in a 35mm rim alternative which may provide you with the best of both worlds - light weight for the hills and improved aero for the long undulating roads. A bit like the Zipp 303's. Like the 303's not cheap - Wiggle are looking for circa £1,200 - presumably prices will fall as they are just hitting the market now.

If budget is closer to the £500 mark, and given you will be tackling lots of hills, I would be inclined to stick with the 24mm rims - not sure what improvement is offered by the new 7900 models (if any).

  • Planet x have a great sale on both 7850CL £450.00 and 7850 50mm £699.00

I have the 7850CL and cant fault them but the 50mm would look sssssoooooo much better but would be heavier by about 300g and would not be the best in windy conditions.

Get em quick at this price.

Please note that the £450 wheels are the aluminium rimmed SL's, not the carbon CL's. The 50mm ones are a bargain at that price.

  • Ig you can afford either, I would go for the 50mm carbon. Light and aero.

I think if you buy the cl, you might sometimes wish you got the 50mm. Im sure if you get the 50mm you wont think about the cheaper options.

I have both, depends on what riding you are doing IMO. Round this neck of the woods short sharp undulating terrain the CL 24's are the best bet, they give a nice ride the 50mm feel rather wooden to me in a comparison, super stiff though. The 50mm are great and look stunning 8) can be a right handful on windy days!
