play in brake levers

the tiagra shifters on one of my bikes have developed play in the brakes, more so in the r/h shifter. its basically not biting the brake cable for the first 15-20mm movement and i've had to tighten the cable to compensate. both shifters do this for some reason. its annoying more tan anything because they flap about over bumpy ground and vibrate like mad
does this sound like a problem anyone else has suffered before?
Any ideas?

Have you changed the tension at the brake caliper end lately? Could be when the cable was tensioned something else was taking up the tension rather than where the level end of the cable sits, meaning it actually has some slack in it that you now have to take up when you pull the lever.0

Jammed caliper not releasing fully when you come off the brakes.0

Have the wheels been off recently? Have the caliper quick releases been flipped back down?0

All of the above, will be at the brake end, not the lever end.0
