MTB/BMX project help!

Hi all,
Im a bit of a knobbis and im looking for a little project. I need lots of advice, any advice will be helpfull!! The problem, is that i have quite a tight budget (i could stretch to £400 but would want to keep the price down). I was thinkin of using mtb parts and frame but without gears.
The purpose of this bike would just be for a bit of fun at weekends (jumping, street riding etc). And make it look a bit mentle with multicoloured bits and bobs.
Thing is, i dont have a clue where to start. All suggestions welcome, help please!
