Good afternoon all.

Tried doing a search for this. Ive also tried the Mavic web site but cant find what i want.

Ive got some Carbone SL wheels coming and was wandering what size tyre to get. 20mm, 22mm, 23mm.

As i understand it, im better off having a tyre thats not wider than the rim for 'Aero' reasons.

Does anyone use these wheels and what tyres do you use?

Also has anyone had any problems with punctures with the GP4000 and Race Light Inner tubes.

Only Problem i had with puctures was on the back wheel when i was running a under-inflated Gatorskin 23mm. (think im on 28mm Hardshell now and no problems for over 1000 miles) No doubt ive just jinxed myself typing that.

  • CRC suggest anything from 19mm right up to 28mm if that's any help?

    There's a link here. Cheers.

  • The type of rim should not be the determinant of what width of tyre you choose to use. Tyre choice is based on intended use. And amount of clearance is the limiting factor in respect of tyre width.

I would say that 23/25 are typical road widths. Anything less is time trial.
  • Just got my cosmic SL's out of the box today myself, fitted GP 4000s black chilli 700x23.

I generaly fit 23mm tyres on all my wheels, many years ago I fitted 20mm but found these to be less stable, read somewhere that most manufacturers recc 23mm as the ideal width.

As for the inner tubes I generally fit standard tubes 18-23/25mm as I find that the difference between lighter tubes is minimal but the heavier standard tubes offer better puncture resistance for general riding, if the wheels were being used for racing only then I would reccomend the lighter tubes.

Hope you like the wheels they made my bike look soooooooo much better and that was only the training bike, my race bike is currently in the LBS being pimped so the wheel will be the finishing touch.

Only just realised this after ordering them, its a bonus i guess.

Some manufacturers so specify tyre width according to aerodynamic effiiciency such as the Zipps that ideally should be used with a 22mm. I've not heard of Mavic's recommendation (if there is one) but I would certainly use 23mm on them for road racing and riding. Make sure you get some good tyres to complement the great wheels. You might want some very long valve inner tubes as well (80 or 60mm valves) to save the hassle with the valve extenders.

How do the valve extenders work?
Do i have to remove the valve from my inner tube?
Also what inner tubes have removeable valves? Been looking all over internet for 2 hours with zero luck.

The only inner tubes i can find are Continental Race 28 Light 80mm Valve.

Have a look at Bontrager inner tubes, they do quite a few valve lengths...
I used a Vittoria valve extender, you remove the valve core from the original tube, then screw in the Vittoria extender.
    Try looking at Ribble.

I wouldn't bother - just get tubes with long valves - not much in comparision to set of carbones

Most of my Conti' tubes have removable valve cores but I can't be bothered with the valve extenders. I'll chuck them in my saddle pack for emergencies but I've opted for a batch of 80mm Conti Light 28s for my new wheels.

Same 80mm valves with my Cosmics. Took a bit of time trying to find stockists at first so I bought a stack of the Bontrager ones.

Tried using contis, but didn't get on with them.

    I ended up with:
Conti 28 Race Light 80mm Valve tubes
23mm Conti 4 Seasons Folding Tyre - FRONT
25mm Conti 4 seasons Folding Tyre - BACK

I like it when people give an update on what they've bought after all the advice.

    Cheers and enjoy the wheels!
