I am looking to change my pedals as I currently have a pair of Shimano MTB spd's on. Looking at a pair of Look Keo or Time, not going to be carbon as funds will not stretch that far!! Any thoughts on either or experience of either would be gladdly received.
Thanks in advance.

I use both, Look on my winter bike and Time on my summer bike. At the end of the day they are both pretty similar in performance, weight and durability.

Go with the ones you think look best.

... but I'd avoid Time RXS - I had two pedals disintegrate while riding hard uphill, and once it resulted in a crash. I'm 75kg, so by no means at the outer limits of what they should be able to handle. Don't know if Time iClic are more robust.

I've been using the same set of Time RXS carbon pedals for 5 or 6 years now with no problems at all. I'm usually about 76-78 kgs and these pedals have taken me up Alpe D'Huez, Ventoux etc etc :)

I'm just using Looks for the first time after a year on SPDs and I'm finding them fine. The plastic cleats are better for walking on too - don't know about wear. It's a bit of a learning curve on clipping in - I'm finding it a bit more critical to crank position - but easy to clip in and easier still to clip out. Pedals & cleats combined are quite a bit lighter than 520s too.

I used mine for years as well, and they were great, but when they go wrong, it's messy....

I was happy with my Looks, but I've now changed to Speedplay. After doing one ride on them I wouldn't go back...

Can you comment on the reasons why for us folks who have never tried both, please?

Looks came fitted to a secondhand bike I bought so, for the price of a set of cleats, I thought I'd try them. Interested to understand why/how Speedplay are better.

  • I've had what were then the basic Look Keo pedals (before the Easy) for 4 years on my bike and had no problems with minimal maintenance. Bearings are still smooth.

Although I haven't got mine properly setup yet (I bought them second hand and just put them on) the massively adjustable float is a god-send. I have a slight niggle in my left knee depending on my foot posiitioning, nothing major, but after about 50k it starts to ache slightly, when I find the time, I'm going to get the float set properly so that I never have my foot in that position, it's a simple 5 minute job with a screwdriver and I know it will make me more comfortable on the bike instantly. I have also had issues with the positioning on my bike, I've not yet been for a bike fit, but doing a basic one at home I found getting my saddle/knee/foot positioned correctly was quite difficult (I've read something recently that implies it could be because of my shoes). However after fitting the speedplays, my cadence instantly increased by about 10rpm because I have managed to get the cleat positioned right over the ball of my foot, something I could never manage with my Looks.
