Evening all,

I need a new bottom bracket for my Lapierre Spicy 316 '09 once again and dont want to fit the standard Shimano product again (Part No SM-BB91-41), see below

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/mtb-press-fit-bottom-bracket-with-inner-cover-for-92-or-895-mm-ec021578

So could anyone point me in the correct direction, I have seen other Pres Fit types BB30, BB90 are these compatible with BB91, its so confusing. I have seen this SRAM one is it likely to fit, it looks the same.

Thanks in advance
Simon

  • Had a read, so your saying I can get the old bearings out of the plastic shell and replace them? Seems far to easy.

  • a lot of the bb issues with the spicy's and zesty's have been due to road pressfit bearings being used, there a Tiny bit larger (do fit okay) but cause the bb shell to pop!

enduro seals are very recommended from what ive seen from other owners, but as nick said, pop the bearing out and nip down your local bearing shop!

I replaced the original bottom bracket bearings in my Zesty (same as the Spicy) after a year of muddy riding. IMO, I would not bother reusing the plastic cups that came with the Shimano bearings. They are not well sealed and they are not easy to take apart to overhaul the bearings. In fact, I ended up destroying the cups trying to remove them from the frame. I replaced them with Enduro press-fit bearings, http://www.enduroforkseals.com/id258.html

The Enduro bearings have lasted 2 years (and counting) and they have the advantage of being easier to remove, although I would definitely recommend buying the Park BB90 removal tool to avoid damaging the cups or frame when (not if) you want to remove them for maintenance, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=50263

Once you have removed the cups from the frame, you can pop the cartridge bearings out of the cups, remove the seals and re-grease the bearings. Reverse the process and push the cups back in the frame. You may need to gently tap them in as they can be a bit tight. Some people use a headset press for this. I have had to overhaul the bearings 2-3 times a year given the muddy conditions around here.

There are other options as well:
    RaceFace X-Type Press Fit BB Cups, £32, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=51397
    KCNC BB90 Bottom Bracket, £29, http://cgi.ebay.com/KCNC-BB90-Adaptor-B ... 2c59eff697

These are all compatible with 24 mm cranks (Shimano, RaceFace, etc.). I am not familiar with the GXP press fit bottom bracket but I don't think it is compatible with your current crankset.

You can stop reading now if you aren't interested in some of the more esoteric aspects of these BB90 products. After hours of research, I have discovered some interesting things to consider:
    1. The bearings in the Shimano, KCNC and RaceFace cups are "standard" 6805 SRS bearings, 25mm x 37mm x 7mm. These are readily available through various retailers including CRC, EnduroForkSeals but also bearing supply houses.
    2. The diameter of Hollowtech 2 crank spindles is 24 mm.
    3. The 1 mm difference between the ID of the bearing and the diameter of the spindle is taken up by plastic shims that sit between the spindle and the bearing. Without the shims, the spindle rattles around in the bearings. These shims can also be replaced, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=39505
    3. The Enduro bearings are 2437 LLB cartridge bearings, 24mm x 37mm x 7mm. The spindle is in direct contact with the inner steel race of the bearings - no plastic shims. However, over time I have noticed some scoring of the spindle where it contacts the bearing race. I'm not sure this is a problem although it may result in a little play over time.
    4. For illustration, if you purchase the KCNC product, you can easily and inexpensively replace the bearings and shims when they wear out. Replacing the Enduro product is somewhat more expensive as the 2437 bearings seem to be less available and more expensive.

I hope I haven't added more confusion to the topic!

Thanks for the post dpaulett, and the question Simon.

My original Shimano press fit BB is starting to make a noise so I think I am going to go with a ceramic Enduro jobbie. Hopefully a 'fit and forget' well at least for while !

Will let you know how I get on.
  • I just bought lapierre spicy 316 and I need to replace bb. After rereDing posts about bb I still not know which type of enduro bb do I need to buy?

  • So if understand right the only thing that I need to replace is bearings - is it real so simple? Do you suggest Enduro ones?
Whatndo you think about replacing bb with kcnc bb90 one?
