Coast to coast by road

Hi I'm thinking about doing a coast to coast ride later this year I've looked at the c2c site and a charity based ride but these seem to be on mixed roads & tracks and advise using a hybrid bike.
My question to you good people is this, Have any of you done a coast to coast ride by road only using a road bike with standard road 23mm tyres?
Are there any organised rides by road?
Advice on route by roads would be appreciated, Thanks.

FWIW I've done [near] Buckingham to Rhyll, all on roads, on 23c tyres and didn't have a problem. I don't see what the issue is tbh - you want to ride a road bike with road tyres on the roads between two places. Sounds easy enough - plot a decent route on Bikehike or similar and off you go.

    :)

I'm planning to do lake district - newcastle in a day in the summer. It's about 80 miles, either by Carlisle way (flat) or if I'm brave, over 750m Hartside pass in the Pennines.

As previous poster says, easy enough to get sorted. Do you have an iPhone? There's an ordnance survey free UK road map on there that doesn't need phone signal. Not great scale so no tiny roads are on there but for planning long treks on B roads or larger it's great.

have done the C2C 3 times on roads using 3 different routes from St Bees all ending at Saltburn-by-Sea, prefer going through the yorkshire dales national park than on national C2C route, lots more options
All lies and jest..still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest....

Hi I would like to ride From Whitehaven to Whitby , I realise that the normal destination is Newcastle or Sunderland.
  • WE did Whitehaven to Sunderland on road bikes with 23mm slick tyres. We used the Sustrans C2C map and plans. This gives a short bit out of Keswick on a cycle path and then a longer cycle path into Sunderland. We had no problems over the distance and had 2 punctures in total. We would probably not do the cycle paths bits again but it would be easy to lose them using one of the cycle planning websites.
  • Thanks Kayakerchris I'll have a look.

Google maps had penrith to newcastle at 77 miles over the hartside pass. Route is straight from penrith, over pass into Alston, past hexham racecourse, then over the Tyne & into west Newcastle via stamfordham.

Got this planned when def good weather known as a training run for trip to alps in summer. Figuring since hartside pass has one hairpin I can pretend I'm there for about 30 seconds...!
