I'm looking at getting a pair of these shoes and was wondering if they're any good as non-SPD shoes with flat pedals?
Also, once they've been fitted with cleats, can they still be used with flats?

They can but not much good as the cleat (real hard) may sit on some pins if you've got them. They are ok for proper flats but who uses those really.

No, I've got a pair but wouldn't use them with flats, the sole is not really suitable.

You have to remove a cover (section of sole) in order to attach the cleats and once its been removed it doesn't go back on.
  • Are there any shoes available that can be worn with flats or SPD's?

Not really. It's one or the other for max performance of each.

Oh well, I thought that might be the case.

I think i'll have a look for some flat shoes for now then go for SPD's some time in future.
  • Seems like it's more difficult than I thought to get hold of some shoes.

I've been to a couple of shops today and called a few more and they all seem to have very little in the way of stock of flat shoes. The advice I'm getting given tends to be either that they can order them in and they'll turn up some time within the next week or so, or the other suggestion is to get them off the internet and send them back if they're no good!

It's all a bit of a pain as i was wanting to get some new shoes for this weekend :(

Skate style shoes often work well with flats.

Only downside is they dont have as solid base as MTB specific shoes so some power is lost. With the right skate shoes and pined pedals grip can be awsome in all conditions.

Just got some of these. Wrong size, though. I'm a size 10 (44) and got a 45 after reading that Shimano sizes are weird and you need to go up a size, but they're still too small. Should've referred to the sizing chart shown on the description tab of this page: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-am41-flat-sole-shoes/

Anyway, on first inspection they look like they'll do the job with flat pedals perfectly. They're not bulky and the flap looks like it'll keep alot of mud and water out.

  • yup and I have Mp66w shoes also and they are pants with my flat pedals! I can't really go up a size as they stop at 48 so I have to make do!

I'm not overly keen on the AM41's but I've been looking at the AM40's and quite fancy a pair of those, strangely I couldn't find anywhere that stocked them either!

I've always liked vans skater shoes for flats, five tens are supposed to be very good as well, but i can't afford them!

problem is the AM40's are older stock as i too fancied them over the 41's funnily enough but the size of my boat feet meant nobody had any left!

taking that into account and getting 10% off the AM41's at Merlin cycles i decided they all look the same when they are mud coloured
