Hi All

Any suggestions for reasonable price gold standard locks and any suggestions for how to secure the bike for insurance purposes

Many thanks

  • I ended up going to Halfords as they had a range of qualifying locks at 'reasonable' prices - the gold standard locks are very expensive though

suggestion: if you change your credit card to Barclaycard Goldfish you gather points against which Halfords vouchers can be traded - it softens the blow - I just bought £40 worth of kit, effectively for free from Halfords.

I like Kryptonite ulocks, have a New York Standard, Mini Evo and Mini Fahg. The New York Standard is rated gold on the Sold Secure website. The Abus Granit 54 gets good reviews as well.

I use bolt down anchors (www.yanchor.com) in my garage and chain my bikes to them. PJB Security Products is another good website, got a wall anchor and chain from them.

It depends on your insurance company. If your bike is covered on your house policy then it's unlikely you'll need a gold standard lock. You just need to take sensible precautions so any decent lock will do. If you've got a bike specific policy then you need a gold standard lock attached to a gold standard anchor with an armed guard on 24 hour watch.
  • If your insurance doesn't require a Sold Secure Gold lock (perhaps your house insurance like Mister W mentions) then don't feel like you have to get one. Erudin is right, the Kryptonite New York 3000 is a very good lock (which I use), but even stronger (but smaller) is the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit which has a thicker shackle but isn't Sold Secure rated.
