If you're comfortable with SPDs (and have pedals and cleats/shoes already?) then stick with them would be my advice

It'll probably bring howls of 'heretic' and worse, but I use SPDs on my road bike and see no need to splash out on changing to SPD-SL or anything else for the sake of it myself

Just put a pair of SPD M520 (double sided) or SPD A520 (single sided) on. Use your current shoes. You can always go for road pedals later if you feel the need (or flush). Many of us use both systems. In winter I have 2 road bikes on SPD.

Stick with your mtb shoes and buy the same pedals for your road bike.

Lots of Roadies wear mtb shoes...Easier to walk in you see.

I like the Specialised range. I use the BG Expert but the Comp and Sport are nearly as stiff. The Defroster sounds good with present weather. I am using Northwave Celsius boots at the moment. Expensive but what price warm feet.
What ever you get fit is the most important thing followed by a stiff sole to prevent hot spots at the cleat.

  • There isn't a range of shoes more comprehensive than the Shimano one.
