Helmets for pony tails?

Can anyone suggest a helmet that fits well with a pony tail?

Before you all say go try them on at your LBS, all my LBS's are at least 20 miles away all in different directions and none stock the same brand of helmet as the other. I would end up doing about 400 miles to check them all out so just need to know which direction to head.

PS I'm a girl so it's got to have good looks but none of that pink rubbish.

To the OP..just check out any mags or t'internet and you'll see pro ladies and whatever helmet they use.
If I were to grow my hair, I don't think I'd have a problem getting it out the back of my Atmos.

nahhhh. . she found the hex too hot on the road bike - we are generally going harder when on the road bikes and she found she neededbetter ventilation to keep head cool. MTB exerttion is more stop start and overheating doesn't seem to be such a big issue....

edit.... she had the MTB and Hex first, then got the road bike.... and finally the Ionis...

I too have a Hex (A carry over from my MTB days) and i bought that originally because of the great venting on it....

Are you saying that Road orientated helmets have superior ventilation ? ( As if so i am going to be spending even more money) :)

I think so.... sorry  I use an atmos both on and off road...and it does fine. The Ionis is so well vented it comes with an inner thermal skull cap for cold weather use to cut down on the cold air entering the lid.

Be careful on fit tho.. my GF head fits the Hex, not so great on he atmos, and fitted the Ionis well, so even the internal helmet shapes don't appear to be consistant within the same brand.

I think road helmets look beter on the road and MTB lids look a bit out of place, but it is ok the other way.

In fairness im not to bothered about the looks, but more functionality,as i do sweat up quite a lot and if a road orientated helmet is going to cool my head a lot better than my current helmet then i will be glad to shell out.........

I bought a Hex first too, for mountain biking, then found it too hot for road biking so bought an atmos and, yes, it's much better vented.

I've owned Specialized and Giro helmets and I can't say I've ever had a problem with any of them with a pony tail. I currently use an S-works and it's fine (have also used OH's Ionos with no probs.) Obviously you have to keep your pony tail quite low and not high! None of my helmets have been women's specific.

I have a Xen for off road which I used quite happily on my road bike until I left it at home one day and borrowed a Spesh S-Works from a mate.

The S-Works felt half the weight of my Giro and no where near as hot and clammy and I admit I'm completely smitten.

Tried on a few today probably down to two, Giro Prolite or Met Inferno.

Previously had a Giro and the Roc Loc, is doen't lock now due to the pony tail. My husband has seen how much I'm thinking of spending and is chasing me round the house with his hair clippers....

My wife uses a Lazer Genisis. The helmet is not straight at the back making it easier for a pony tail to sit comfortably. She spent ages looking at options before deciding on this one.

"Rather than wrapping horizontally round the occipital lump at the back of your skull, twin loops cradle the rear sides of your head and tighten with a roller, creating an outstandingly snug and secure, ponytail-friendly grip that allows for the shape of your head as well as its size"

I really like this, definatly going to try one of these before ordering the Atmos.
  • Girls with too much time on our hands? Nah, helmets gotta fit! You have to wear your pony tail low when riding. I have several helmets, mostly 'cause I'm a ding bat and leave them places, order another one and then ultimately get them back. The Lazer is my favorite.
