Ok not strictly MTB but I have an issue with my Bowery.

For some reason the bike doesnt coast easily when on the freewheel.

I have replaced the freewheel (with a white industries one), chainring (with a TA),the chain (KMC something or other) and the tugs. However it still does it.

The new freewheel has made some change in that I can no longer fixie skid stop whilst on the freewheel however its still stiff.

The chain is not too tight either, I've checked it over and over and theres a good bounce in the chain when I depress it etc.

Any idea whats going on?

about 1/2 of vertical movement in one chain run?

    sounds like too much tension.

Check for tight spot on the chainring, might not be quite central (see sheldon brown for details on how to remove this wobble)

As for the skid stops, you cant fixie skid stop with a freewheel.

Ahh... I know the crank arms need replacing as they are not very good, in that the hole for the axle/spindle is not centred (which can be clearly seen when the crank arm is removed).

So it might just be a tight spot at one point then? I'll decrese the tension and hope it doesnt get too loose at the other side :/

    I'm a little confused...

You can't skid stop on a freewheel, so what did you actually replace?

Wouldn't a chain have to be mega tight to affect coasting on the freewheel, (that is tight enough to distort the freewheel mounting and cause bind) if the chains not moving it shouldn't create drag.

Wonder if its just hubs or brakes!

Normally you cant no, however with my old freewheel I could. I replcade the freewheel, chain and chainring nothing more.

Its certainly not mega tight, there is one tight spot which I'll resolve before riding home tonight.

The brakes are certainly ot rubbing, I pride myself on setting them up properly these days.

The wheel does spin freely however the cranks just happen to go round with it too in either direction. I can make it freewheel at the moment by simply stopping the cranks from spinning.with my foot/hand/face/anything.

Im startng to wonder if its as simple as my bb. It might sound stupid but if the crank arms are easier to turn than to freewheel to coast then wouldnt that be a possible cause.

My old freewheel sticking is likely due to road salt etc destroying it.
